A Date with Destiny ©2016 Robert George BMI

We were set up on a blind date by some high school friends
And we sat there with our fancy dinners feelin’ tense
She liked track n field and I’d been learnin’ how to shoot
So we traded small talk tryin’ hard to not be rude

I was bored by her and she was bored by me
That was long ago, and we didn’t know
That we’d had a date with destiny

Four years later I pulled up outside the country store
I was there for Cheetoh’s and a six of Coors
And the bright fluorescent lighting made it seem so clear
Through the windows I saw robbers and a girl cashier

They had shotguns but they hadn’t yet seen me
And I learned that fate is never late
When you have a date with destiny

I could tell those guys were human trash,
And they wanted somethin’ more than cash
But they both had lots of fire power
I’d forgot my phone and couldn’t call 911
Went back to my truck and got my gun
Hopin’ for the blessing of a Higher Power

Well, I tried to sneak in that old country store
But the bell went off above the door
My hand was shakin’ when I shot the first guy in the side
The girl ran out the back door and then vanished in the night

And I had a double barrel pointed straight at me
But he had no chance, fate had other plans
And I had a date a with destiny

The scene was crazy, fast and wild,
The wounded outlaw missed me by a mile
And his buddy ran to catch the poor cashier
Yeah, that store was hell and gone from town,
So he figgered he could run her down
But it was almost like she’d disappeared

Well, the wounded robber passed out by the candy shelf
And his partner wandered in the darkness by himself
He’d run maybe half a mile and he felt close to death
She was nearin’ town and wasn’t even out of breath

O she called the cops and sent ‘em back for me
Then she ran back all the way, to make sure I was ok
Sensing we had a date with destiny

We sat there on the hood of my old truck
Shared some M & Ms and talked of heaven’s will and luck
We ignored the lights and news vans all around that store
Fate had sewn our lives as one forevermore

The ways of love are something we can’t always see
So we have to trust, the heart that’s meant for us
Will share our date with destiny
