Dubstep - "Bass Blaze"

Post by pboss » Thu Mar 07, 2013 7:29 am

Hi, I'm looking for any opinions (or hard facts) you may have about this track.

"Bass Blaze" found here:
https://soundcloud.com/pattyboss/bass-blaze

This is a first mix. I'm still working on getting the levels strong enough, and playing around with how to do the arrangement and drops and whatnot. This is a reggae-feel dubstep track. There are actually two listings out there right now for dubstep, but this one will do for now:

Y130311DS

INVENTIVE DUBSTEP/EDM SONGS *and* INSTRUMENTALS in the style of "Doomsday" by Nero, "Woo Boost" by Rusko, "I Can't Stop" by Flux Pavilion, etc., are needed by the OWNER of a really cool Music Library that's had lots and lots of TV placements. They're looking for Songs AND Instrumentals that are CONTEMPORARY-SOUNDING, and have plenty of ENERGY. If you submit a SONG, please be sure your lyrics are UNIVERSAL and GENERAL enough to work in a wide variety of scenes. Avoid referencing specific names, places, dates, time, brands, etc. in your lyrics. Vocal and instrumental performances MUST be top-notch. NO PROFANITY. MALE and/or FEMALE vocals are BOTH OK. MID-to-UPTEMPO ONLY. Broadcast quality is needed (excellent home recordings are fine.) You MUST own or control 100% of your composition and master recording to pitch for this listing. This is an Exclusive catalog, so please be sure that you DO NOT submit songs that are already signed to another library, label or publisher. Please submit one to three songs and/or instrumentals online or per CD, include lyrics. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO FULL CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than Monday, March 11, 2013. TAXI #Y130311DS

Thank you!

Hey, thanks so much, Glen, Robert and Kyle, for taking the time to listen. Kyle, thanks for pointing out the cluttered issue at the drop - did you mean that to be the point where the drop begins around 1 min and then going forward from there (I think that's what you meant).

I'll take a look and try to thin that up. I also felt like I had too much bass 'mud' in there at the drop, but not sure how that is coming across on your respective listening environments.

This is really strong Patty. I listened to several tracks on your SC page. This one stands out among your dubs for the speed with which you bring in new elements without letting things get chaotic. That seems to be the new standard in this genre & IMHO you nailed it.

BTW, I was struck by the variety of styles you handle with such seeming ease. Great stuff!

Good luck,
Mike

Hi Michael, thanks a lot.

I haven't done a subsequent mix on it yet, but I may try to thin a little, based on feedback here. But it's my fifth dubstep track after deciding to dive into the genre a few months ago. I am working on getting initial levels up higher within Logic, and that is one element that is reflected in this piece I think.

I also think that these types of tracks may benefit from having a 'regular' version where the drop is one minute in, and a TV version where the drop happens much quicker, as that is the portion the publishers seem interested in. I'm still focused on managing form, but also, having the goal of coming up with some kind of melodic theme. Onward and forward with the production! Thanks again for listening.

And regarding genres on my SC page, I am a piano player and hack at guitars. I went back and actually studied privately for all of 2012 for composition and counterpoint, which is where the 18th century style fugue came from. To tell you the truth, it was Mazz that recommended getting the pencil out and studying (and having the teacher erase what you wrote he described, ha). Even though I have a degree from Berklee, I did not get much counterpoint in my particular program, so delving into it was really a good experience for me.

I got a little counterpoint as well as form & analysis. It's all a dim memory now.
