What does this mean exactly?

Post by DeanT » Wed Jan 04, 2017 4:10 pm

"This Exclusive, In-House Library will pay an initial buyout fee of $250 for 100% of the Composition and Master rights."

I've been seeing this phrase on some listings lately. I'm just wondering: are they proposing to buy your copyright for $250? Or is it more like buying the publishing?

They buy the publisher's share and the master recording. You keep the writer's share and get $ from your PRO. Getting $ up front is usually a good deal, as you are otherwise not guaranteed income. Many libraries now take 100% of the publisher's share for no money up front! So (IMHO), getting this income up front, and going into a library owned by a company that produces TONS of shows is a good deal. They're incentivized to use the music, as they make money. and when THEY make money, so do you... and that's AFTER getting something up front!

my 2 cents,
Michael
