Starting Out Question

Post by fuzzbox » Thu Nov 17, 2016 12:50 am

I would like to start as I mean to go on, so...

I'm starting from ground zero at it were, and I'm new to all this  do you think it is beneficial to have/use a company name or an artist name when applying for listings? Or doesn't it really matter?

I aim to pick a listing, songs or cues and go for that in the genre of Rock: indie rock/alternative rock type stuff :|

Any guidance at this stage is appreciated. :D

Thanks for reading

Hi Fuzzbox,
It doesn't matter what you're called when submitting to listings. However, its worth bearing in mind that you're aiming for track to be forwarded and potentially placed. Also, the forward/placement might lead to a request for more music. Therefore, it is worth deciding how you want to proceed (artist name/company) so that there is consistency in your contact details. Even the seemingly insignificant stuff (like ensuring that you still have the same email address in a few years time) is worth getting sorted out. Once you're settled you can be confident that people will know how to get back to you, even if its been a year since they first got your music. BUT none of this should stop you submitting for now. You can get some momentum while you put things in place.

Its good to have a specific genre that you specialise in and can target the listings. Indie rock comes up quite frequently in the instrumental listings, so if you have songs but could strip out vocals and still have a strong instrumental tracks then you can consider instrumentals too. Its always worth stretching out and having a go at other genres that you think you can cover as well. You might find new avenues for your talents, and for $5 per shot it won't break the bank. Taxi feedback will help you decide whether to try more or move on :)

For now though, start submitting, learn from the feedback, make your music the best it can be, ask for help if you're stuck, keep writing, keep going. The mantra you'll hear over and over is..... 'write, submit, forget, repeat' .

Ohhh, and find way to raise the airfare to LA for next year's Taxi Road Rally!
[Then let me know how you did that so I can join you]

Are you submitting to Film/TV or artist listings?

I agree that it isn't as important at this stage - especially if you are doing the film/tv route. If you are doing the Artist track, than I can see more of an argument for going with your name over company name, as you might as well start building that name up as you go along. If you are more interested in being an engineer for other artists, maybe a company name makes more sense.

But, it is more important to focus on writing and submitting; then learn from your returns and celebrate your forwards.

My only recommendation is you pick one and stick with it. Not that you can't change up later, but you start to build a rep and a "brand" as you move forward and why not build that a bit as you go?

I have a company name, but I really do everything under my personal name.

I'm not sure what the benefit would be to using a company name. As you know, you cannot submit to TAXI listings on behalf of anyone unless you are a co-writer of the music.
