I was watching an AC/DC concert recently, and the thing that struck me was that Angus and Malcom played the same chord inversions, but with different guitars (and probably amps). Angus used a Gibson SG, and Malcom used a semi-hollow body Gibson. The tones were stunningly different, even though they were basically playing the same chords. Panned left and right, you get that AC/DC sound!

The rhythm guitar had a lot more bite and attack, and the lead guitar had more saturation and depth.... Also check out Neil Young and his rhythm player Frank Sampedro. Both Les Pauls, both Fender amps, but somehow they sound different even playing the same chordal inversions. Makes a big, BIG sound heheh! I love this stuff!!!

Best,

Ern 8-) :)

All I know is that when I go to the (dive) bar people are basically shaking their booty to 'Back in Black' - AC/DC, 96 BPM. They don't do that to Led Zeppelin (although I do inside for sure). Of course, that song has that great rhythmic guitar riff that stops for a beat and starts. If you need an ala, I personally might go for one of those anthemic songs, and the BPM will probably be key on this. I guess it depends upon if the listener is lifting weights (gnarly music: great) - or running... I feel like it has to be the perfect tempo for that.

PS do we get paid for this focus group?

Patty: 96 bpm, eh!? Never thought of that. Maybe that's why the drummer quit the band for awhile. LOL! Well, $$ took care of the bpm blues for him, I guess! They get to rock out on other numbers.

Wasn't "Billie Jean" @ 120 bpm, like a marching band? I always think of that song when I'm going for 120.

What bpm is "Rock & Roll" by Led Zeppelin? I'll bet it's almost double 96.

For what it's worth,

Well, 96 is 192 BPM if you tap the groove (say, the bass quarter notes) - This is on a quick sampling of the AC/DC track. But Back in Black would probably feel slow for running and fast for super drunken swaying. But you're totally right, I mean if you think of club/dance music (authentic shake-your-booty music, or in other realms, shake your jazzercise tights) - yes, 120 or 125 right there! Let's get spinning.

I think the listing specified between 60 and 160 beats per minute. What I am working on is somewqhere around 110. GOing more for the Zeppelin thiing but may want to do another in the vein of one of the two other bands. I drive a lot during the day, and I will usually download at least one album in the vein of these guys (as I did with Zep and Aerosmith) but apparently AC/DC hasn't allowed their stuff to be sold as .mp3.

OMG that sounds good. Even though it's not all finished like on an album, the palate of sound fills the entire spectrum. Led Zep forever! Music to my ears.

Angus and Malcolm both play through 100w plexi's but Malcolm's are set clean 0 distortion. Angus plays on 10 +
Malcolm plays a Gretch with stock pickups. His sound comes from his hands. He uses heavy strings and he plays very aggressively.
They do play different chord inversions depending on the song. Your right regarding some songs , they play the same.
There are a lot of tunes where they play independant to one another.
Check out Stiff Upper Lip.
They play completely different riffs together to get the sound.

They have plenty of guitars in AC/DC but Mal's main axe is a semi-hollow Gretsch with Filterr'Trons and very large strings. IIRC Mal uses bare fingers and digs in quite a bit, but he's not as clean as he sounds; there's some power section distortion and a bit of chime going on, though he favors 100W Marshall plexis and occasionally Hiwatts in the studio.

These are all very helpful guys, thanks. Concentrating on a Zep one and hopefully would like to write another in the vein of one of the two other bands and mix before the deadline. DOn't know why this Zep one is giving me a hard time, but will likely post peer to peer before the end of the weekend.
