OK so here is the listing:
__________________________________________
SOLO GUITAR and SOLO PIANO INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS are U-R-G-E-N-T-L-Y needed for a Compilation CD TAXI will be personally handing to a VERY BUSY MUSIC SUPERVISOR at our upcoming meeting with him. The Supervisor uses TONS of Instrumental Tracks that you'd often hear on some really big REALITY SHOWS. For this Compilation we'd like to feature SLOW, SOLO INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS, done on Gut or Nylon-String Acoustic Guitars, or Acoustic Piano. We'll need tracks that are at LEAST 2 minutes long, and have buttoned endings - NO fades, please!

Please submit tracks that sound emotionally ROMANTIC, INTROSEPECTIVE, or HOPEFUL. TAXI TIP: Do NOT try to show what a musical virtuoso you are, so much as creating melodies that create a mood and support an EMOTION! Keep it simple!!! Could your track be used in a scene where somebody is falling in love? Send it in! Could it support a close up shot of somebody who appears to be having an introspective moment? Send it in! Could it be used in a scene where somebody just solved his or her big problem of the day, and hope is on the horizon? Yeppers... send it in, because that's what we need to show this Supervisor our members can do incredibly well!

BUTTONED ENDINGS PREFERRED. Instrumental presentation must be top-notch, and your guitars and pianos should sound REAL! Broadcast Quality is needed (excellent sounding home recordings are fine). You must own 100% of your master and composition, and your submissions can NOT be in any other catalog or library. If the Supervisor hears anything on our compilation that he'd like to license, he's only going to want to use material that will be easy to clear. Please submit one to three Instrumentals online or per CD. All submissions will be screened on a YES/NO BASIS - NO FULL CRITIQUES FROM TAXI - and must be received no later than TUESDAY, February 28th, 2013, at 5:30pm (PST). TAXI #U130228IN

My question is about this passage: "Please submit tracks that sound emotionally ROMANTIC, INTROSEPECTIVE, or HOPEFUL. TAXI TIP: Do NOT try to show what a musical virtuoso you are, so much as creating melodies that create a mood and support an EMOTION! "

WHAT does this MEAN? :? - my translation is: 'We want emotional songs that don't sound emotional, or have a melody'.

I don't understand. Seemed like the perfect listing for me until they added the contradiction in there.

Then they say "NO fades" and later they say "BUTTON ENDINGS PREFERRED"

Any thoughts as to what they REALLY are asking for?

Heya Mike

It looks like the words "so much" are throwing you. I would agree that the sentence is poorly constructed and easily misconstrued.

I think what they mean is the EMOTION is the main focus, not being a fantastic player. (either way you're in eh? ;) )
They probably should have written it as 2 sentences like this:
Do NOT try to show what a musical virtuoso you are. Instead, give us melodies that create a mood and support an EMOTION!

As far as "no fades" and "button endings preferred"... aren't they saying the same thing two different ways? Ya I can see how using "preferred" sorta opens the door a little on fades... but I think information in listings need to be seen as a whole. In the case of "button endings preferred," that looks like a stock cut-and-paste, while the "NO fades" was probably actually typed by a human for the listing.

Russell

p.s. I just read the listing real-quick again... and my brain changed "so much as" to "such as",,, tricky thing that brain. :?

Hey Russell,

Thanks for that! I think you have de-coded the message for me. And I got at least 3 things all ready to go.... maybe a good time to make another one just cause.

What sticks out for me is that they want to "support emotion" and "sound emotionally ..........." but I read it as being careful to not be too over wrought emotionally. Satie instead of Liszt is what they want, IMO.

As far as button endings go, of course on an emotional slow piece you aren't going to do "shave and a haircut", you'll most likely hold a chord at the end. That would be considered a button ending, IMO, as opposed to actually fading the piece out with the master fader as the final melodic statement is being played.

I've been wrong many times before, so take it with a grain of salt.

I've just written a couple of tracks for this listing, went to the listings page to submit, and the listing is not there!

Is it just me or has it gone?

Hey, Guys,

We're surprised you didn't noticed the BIGGEST contradiction, and that is: WHEN IS THE DEADLINE??? The listing says "Tuesday, Feb. 28." On our calendar that's a THURSDAY!!!

Also, we went to submit a track and the listing is NO WHERE to be found. Did it get pulled?

What gives???

~ T&V

Mazz, great insight! (as usual) :)

T&V, totally missed that one  but can't find it now either. :?

Hope it appears again or a new note is sent out. I think I may have some contenders ready and it sounds like ya'll do too.

SOLO guitar and piano seems a little odd for a listing, I would think they might be snowed under with submissions. :o
Maybe that was why it was pulled.

Maybe Thursday is the second Tuesday of that week.

I had a comment from a screener about this. Three songs, "Pools," "Searching For" and "Empty Glass" were forwarded with this comment in the critique:

None of these tracks has a very solid button ending - it helps the music editor a lot if they have an ending hit at similar level and instrumentation to the body of the song so that they can edit it onto the end of the music when it has been cut to the appropriate length.

So apparently there are "degrees" of button endings.

Russell

Edit: other people also noticed the conflicting dates... and the missing listing topic112183.html
