#U130314AR Alt/Indie Rock for BIG $$ :D March 14th deadline

Post by NathanNasby » Wed Mar 13, 2013 3:50 pm

I hope this one fits the bill. I'm only on the first draft here and rushing like a mad man. I saw the email for this listing Monday night and fired off an email to my main colab man from the UK Adam Maxfield. Asked him if he wanted to try to tackle this with only a few days notice. A few hours later he sent me a few guitar riffs, and a bass line. I slept on it..... which is usually the best way to start a project :)! Then Yesterday I got song written with the parts and melody. I got the lyrics finished and recorded this morning. I'd like to do more with the vox (adding a harmony or octave part in the chorus) but first off I wanted to get some feedback on if this is in the right direction. I'm so bad at interpreting these listing so fire away. I really wanted to hit the big soaring uplifting feel.

MUSIC SUPERVISOR working on a HOLLYWOOD FEATURE FILM NEEDS ALT ROCK/INDIE ROCK SONGS with MALE VOCALS in the general style of:

"So Alive" by Ryan Adams http://bit.ly/5akWO9

"The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World http://vevo.ly/eC6QVN

"For Nancy (Cos It Already Is)" by Pete Yorn http://bit.ly/dqNacr

Quoting The Music Supervisor: "This song needs to be exceptionally SOARING, and ANTHEMIC."

This vibe of this scene is all about getting over fear, overcoming obstacles in life, feeling good about a new accomplishment, etc. Your song should have a POSITIVE, and UPLIFTING FEEL. They're looking for songs with DRIVING GUITARS, and STRONG, SOARING, and MELODIC VOCAL PERFORMANCES.

UNIVERSAL LYRICS will work best for this pitch. MID-to-UPTEMPO SONGS with a great INDIE ROCK attitude are needed.

March 14th. TAXI #U130314AR

And It Feels Alright

Verse 1

Go ahead and take your first step
Towards a life that's been waiting for you
Like an old friend you've never met
And it feels so right, so bright and new

Pre Chorus

And it feels so right...... So bright and new

Chorus

And it feels alright like stepping into sunshine
You will have to squint your eyes to see what it's like on the outside
And it feels alright like kicking off your shoes
After you walked a hundred miles and braved a wild ride
And it feels alright

Go ahead let it sink in
You will never no, never be the same
Like a bridge that's been wanting to burn
And it feels so right, your never going back again.

Pre chorus

And it feels so right, your never going back again

Chorus

And It's alright, like stepping into sunshine
You will have to squint your eyes to see what it's like on the outside
And it feels alright like kicking off your shoes
After you walked a hundred miles and braved a wild ride
And it feels alright

Bridge

And it feels alright just to know that you
Have gone through hell and still pulled through
And it feels alright to finally say
You've danced in the rain and like it that way
You've danced in the rain and you like it that way

Chorus

Nathan!!!!!

Really, REALLY GOOD!! Nice vox and drums, among other things. Beautiful uplifting chorus with tasteful effects. 2nd & 3rd chorus needs a little more “belt” in the vocal dept. though. Reach for those notes, man! (try redoing those sections when you're awake for a while?)

Reminds me of the Gin Blossoms a little.

Right now, I give it an 8.8 out of 10.
Impressive!!!!

Can't wait to hear the final mix!!
Good luck with this future hit!!

Nice job, Nathan! Your vox remind me of Butch Walker.

I think the melodic hook is the first line of the chorus. I would suggest repeating that melody with different lyrics for the second line, before jumping into the wordier current second line.

Good luck with it!

Thanks guys!

I still have tonight and tomorrow to tweak things here so I'm def going to try giving the last 2 chorus a bit more mojo. :)! Still going to experiment a bit with other harmony and backing vox in the chorus.

Chip, thanks for introducing me to Butch Walker! I have never heard his music and some very cool stuff there to take inspiration from. I'm going to try out what you suggest as well and see if I can keep the hook running a bit longer before getting wordy.

Really appreciate the kind words and good advice.

Hi Nathan. Very cool song. Great vocals. The drums are a little busy in the second verse. After the bridge - "danced in the rain and you like it that way" - I'd do a drop - cut the drums - and build it up again for the final chorus. The guitars sound a bit dry and DI sometimes. Maybe add some delay to the vocals in the chorus? How about a pad during the chorus?
Plus one on Butch Walker! Just watched him on Daryl's house ("Say It Isn't So") and then a song called "Summer of 89".
Cheers,
Doug

Glad to make the Butch "introduction!"

I may have to look you up for a collab the next time I start writing something in that vein. I really like your vocal style! Hope all of your 11th hour work on this track turns into a forward, then a deal.

Best of luck with it!

Doug! I love the drop idea :) working on that right now actually! I'm playing with a few dif pads right now, but I'm really really trying to keep this one from sounding at all 90's :) and I find that most pads instantly take a tune that way. Might find something that fills it in and still sounds contemporary of the alt/indie rock sound. Going to add some color to the guitars as well, though they were recorded on a marshal amp so no DI there, but I know what you mean and agree.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the good tips here, and I'm running with them.

Chip, you have an amazing sound and very high quality recordings. You put something together that would work well with my vox (though I do almost anything :) and I'm game to go in on something that will catch some supervisor attention!

Yeah it's been a bit dry for me haha - I guess I've only been on here about a month, but it will be great to get some more material through as I've only had 1 forward. This industry is not for the faint of heart :)!

I'll post a newer version here as soon as I get it done. Thanks again everyone!

Alright, so any last critiques would be awesome, but I am running out of time here :) with only a couple hours before the deadline. I ended up doing a doubled up part on the chorus. I love the drop at the end of the bridge that builds into the 3rd chorus and then I added a subtle harmony with the third chorus.

Better, Worse??? Let me know quick as you can.... Thanks guys, your thoughts really help get my tracks as good as they can get.

Nathan …

GREAT tune man!! Nice revisions! Smile on my face the entire time during the listen (even if I never heard that “vocal belt” I was hoping for between 2:06-2:09 & 2:55-2:59). :( It may not be a deal breaker though.

BEST of luck!!!!! I’m really routin’ for ya!!

Can't wait to hear about it being forwarded. Tell us when it does!
