FAWM 2014 - First Attempt
Hey everyone. Huge thanks to Steven Guiles for educating me about this awesome event.
February Album Writing Month - here's my profile. http://fawm.org/fawmers/chameleon/
Just got the first track written and even had the energy to do a quick youtube live video of the song. It's a bit rough, but was almost a bit liberating just doing a rough raw live track like this haha.
Song #1 is called Find You. - http://youtu.be/J31rYKcf2X4
If you are taking part post here, or add me on the FAWM network. Looking forward to what this month bring creativity wise.
Cheers,
Nathan
Lyrics :
Intro
run run run run run run run run
hide hide hide hide hide hide hide hide
Ooooooooooooooooo
Short chorus
You could run
You can hide
Doesn't matter there's no cure until I find you
Verse 1
Diamond cut so unlike the rest
Gotta find you
Heart p-pounds rippin up my chest
Gotta find you
Got the shakes after just one taste
Gotta find you
Made my past such a total waste
Gotta find you
Chorus
This time doesn't matter where I hide
No where to escape to when the poison is inside
Now you got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Yeah you got me beautiful
Gotta find you
This time doesn't matter where I run
I been on a treadmill baby chasing down your love
You got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Yeah you got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Verse 2
Fell so fast never lost the rush
Gotta find you
Every line like Picasso's brush
Gotta find you
Tasted love now I live with lust
Gotta find you
Dreamed in gold now it turns to rust
Gotta find you
Chorus
Lately doesn't matter where I hide
No where to escape to when the poison is inside
Now you got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Yeah you got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Lately doesn't matter where I run
I been on a treadmill baby chasing down your love
You got me beautiful
Gotta find you
Yeah you got me beautiful
Gotta find you

Re: FAWM 2014 - Are you in???
Hey Nathan
Great song! I love the bare bones approach, I think it gives more feeling to a song. It is also nice to see the set up you use to record. If I might be so bold, what kind of mics. are you using? They seem to pick up the sound really well. I use Shure 57 mics. and they seem very limited and I practically have to eat them to get enough volume on them.
Anyway, great song as usual
All the best
Tom.

Re: FAWM 2014 - Are you in???
Awesome another Fawmer to connect with. I'll add you to my watch list and maybe we can collaborate on something ! Thanks for the kind words!
Really appreciate the support Tom. This is a very bare bones recording, and I would have had trouble doing this in the past as I usually feel pretty insecure when all my flaws are out in the open like this ! I don't always use this setup for my micing approach, but I played around with this setup for this particular recording. These mics are a standard for me though in a lot of tracking. I almost always use my Lauten Atlantis FC-387 now for vocals. The rare exception is my SM-57 for some of the alternative or rock stuff, but I get such clarity and crisp sound out of the Atlantis that I can add the grunge later if I want. I employ different setups under different circumstances, but I love how this mic has a lot of setting built in. For this I used the +10 db switch so I could back off from the mic a bit more and still get a big of guitar bleed for a fuller saturation of the guitar in the mix. That also lets me pull the gain back on my pre's fader for a super clean recording that picks up most of my vocal dynamics.
I use a few different mics for acoustic guitar, but often go back to my Neumann TLM 103. Not as crisp as the Lauten or my ribbon, or even my Rode NT1, but it has a full sound that I like.
That's about it for the setup. Neumann about 10" from the guitar aimed about middle between the sound hole and sting pegs. The Atlantis I just kept up high enough that I didnt' get too much bleed on the guitar but enough to add to the mix. With the +10 db this mic picks up great sound anywhere from 6" to a couple feet with great clarity. You can see eve with me moving my head around and keeping perfectly static to the mic it still didn't shift the sound quality too much. I Did stereo mix the mono guitar and put the vocal in the middle. A little compression and eq on vox and guitar tracks and a bit of room verb on the whole mix and that's the end result.
Cheers,
Nathan

Thanks Nathan
I took a lot of notes and hopefully I can incorporate this info into my recordings. I appreciate the time it took you to write that all out for me, so wish me luck. I know that it is a lot about trial and error. I think I've done most of the errors, so I'm half way there
All the best

Hi Nathan,
I'm not taking part in FAWM, but I checked out your video, and I'm just blown away by your performance, especially the vocal.
As well ... nice song, nice guitar part and nice recording. So I checked out some of your earlier videos. Great stuff there too.
Then I took a closer look at your post and I saw you're from Manitoba ... the home of The Guess Who ... my favorite classic rock band. Must be something in the water around there.
Looking forward to hearing more of you in the future. Good luck.

Re: FAWM 2014 - Are you in???
Your very welcome Tom! Glad you could take something away from all of that haha! I tend to expound when someone asks me a question !
Really appreciate the support Jim! The Guess Who are one of my top fav bands of all time. The music never gets old.
I actually got song #2 done late tonight. It's been so crazy right now in my studio that I'll be happy to keep up with the deadlines. I have about 6 projects on the go atm, and you can tell I'm doing this video late after a long day haha, I look a bit like a burned out zombie!
I am although having a blast. It's very rewarding writing and working like this on a deadline and forcing myself to be able to play them live. Even if they are rough.
Song #2 is called "Burn"! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOFGKBZMJX0
Lyrics
Burn
Verse1
Was it so long ago
When all that we needed was love
Was it so far away
That beautiful place
Where the only thing that mattered was us
Pre-Chrous
Well I can't remember the time or the place
It slowly slipped away
But I still remember the look on your face
When you finally heard me say
Chorus
I never wanted to run
I never wanted to fly
I never wanted to shoot for the moon
I just wanted the light in your eyes
You were the one
Who was chasing the sun
But I was the one who would burn
Verse 2
Was it ever enough
Those moments when stars collide
Did I lie to myself
Was there nobody else
Were you happy to be by my side
Pre-Chrous
Well I can't remember the time or the place
It slowly slipped away
But I still remember the look on your face
When you finally heard me say
Chorus
I never wanted to run
I never wanted to fly
I never wanted to shoot for the moon
I just wanted the light in your eyes
You were the one
Who was chasing the sun
But I was the one who would burn

Hey Nathan
Another beautiful song. I read the lyrics first. I tend to do that because a lot of times I get caught up in the music and disregard the lyrics. When I read your lyrics I knew it was going to be a great song before I heard it...and I was right
Keep up the great work!

I am also doing FAWM this year for the first time. I just got back from vacation though, and am already behind. Nathan, love that first song you posted and your live recording set up. Sounds spectacular. My profile is http://fawm.org/fawmers/ellsworth/. Gotta get to work.

Thanks Tom! I know what you mean haha I often do the same thing. I like to absorb a lyric and then get into a track.
Awesome Paul. I'll add you to my watch list. Let's keep in touch and try to collab at some point this Feb. You have a great sound and voice ( I assume that's you singing in your soundcloud posts)!
Cheers guys!
