In the Time I’m Here ©2014 Robert George BMI

I was married by the North Star and the ocean is my Missus
But I know a dancing girl in Singapore
And she always lets me dance for free because she loves the kisses
That my lonely months at sea will bring ashore

Well, the Good Lord gathered me from dirt and gave me breath
On the grounds I owe the sea my bones upon my death
Shining mornings soon turn into shadows made of years
So I never look behind me, and let fading daylight blind me
In the time I’m here

I have gambled life and limb upon the back roads of the ocean
Yet my faith in fortune still has much to prove
And the boots of life are polished with the dusty rags of motion
And a poet’s reckless dreams need room to move

So the Good Lord gathered me from dirt and gave me breath
On the grounds I owe the sea my bones upon my death
Shining mornings soon turn into shadows made of years
So I never look behind me, and let fading daylight blind me
In the time I’m here…In the time I’m here

Sailors taste the air of foreign shorelines and still dine like vagrants
On a freighter’s bunk bed with a can of beans
Yet for all I’ve seen and heard a dancing girl’s erotic fragrance
Does the most to make me feel a man of means

O the Good Lord gathered me from dirt and gave me breath
On the grounds I owe the sea my bones upon my death
Shining mornings soon turn into shadows made of years
So I never look behind me, and let fading daylight blind me
In the time I’m here…In the time I’m here

The time I’m here…
