Miami - Returned and I STRONGLY DISAGREE (U140205MI)
Just found out my "Miami" song was not forwarded. I do not understand how my song does not fit within the broad, BROAD range of the referenced artists (Bob Seger, Blues Brothers, Will Smith and Pitbull). Seems like the Music Supe was less interested in a specific musical style than a song that talked about the city of Miami. The screener says my song is not suited for a montage of the city. How is that true? My song is definitely broadcast quality, is upbeat, talks about the city of Miami in the lyrics and even uses a bit of traditional latin cowbells bells to give some cuban spice. How did it at least not qualify for a forward?

This is one of those times that I wish Taxi was like the NFL because I'd definitely throw my red flag and call for a Composers Challenge on this one.
Michael, any plans for an "instant replay review" from the booth?
Thanks for listening.

SONGS about MIAMI are needed by an A-List Music Supervisor working on a Hit TV Series. He's eagerly waiting to hear Mid-to-Up-Tempo Songs in ALL Genres with Male or Female vocals about Miami, the “Magic City.” Lyrics about the city’s bustling scene, and having the word "Miami" as part of the hook are key for this pitch. Check out these reference songs to wrap your head around the type of lyric themes this Supervisor is searching for: "Going Back To Miami" by The Blues Brothers: http://bit.ly/1b4IkKb "Miami" by Bob Seger: http://bit.ly/L9oKCa "Welcome To Miami" by Pitbull: http://bit.ly/1gqwHS8 "Miami" by Will Smith: http://bit.ly/1koPQWc "Miami" by U2: http://bit.ly/L9pkQw Your Songs will be used in montage scenes with dramatic, sweeping views of Miami’s skyline and beaches to establish the location. The energy and vibe of your Song can be upbeat, fun, and infectious, with references to sun drenched beaches, bikinis, suntan oil, beach volleyball, rollerblading, drinking, partying, nightclubs, dancing, etc. It's also okay to explore the darker side of the city’s seedy underbelly too. Like all cities, there's good and there's bad. Paradise often comes with a cost. Lyric themes about Miami’s gangs, drugs, violence, prostitution, street life, etc., could all work for this, as long as you're sure to reference the City of Miami by name. While Supervisors typically avoid songs with specific names, places, and locations, this gent is hungry for just the opposite in this case! Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). Please, do NOT copy or rip off the referenced artists in any way, shape, or form. Your vocal performance should be captivating, unique, and strong for this placement. The estimated license fee for this is $1,000 - $3,000. This is a Direct-to-Music Supervisor placement, so you'll keep 100% of the sync fee and any applicable performance royalties. Plus you'll keep 100% of your Publishing and Master ownership! You must own or control 100% of the Master and Copyright to pitch for this opportunity. All Songs will be screened on a Yes/No basis. No full critiques. Please submit 1-3 Songs no later than Wednesday, February 5th, 2014 by 3pm (PST). TAXI #U140205MI

Hmm. Kind of a funk disco reminiscent of Patrick Cowley with the latin cowbells, (Do ya wanna funK-Sylvester) and Megatron Man with the vocoder, and of course the falsetto Sylvester-type vocal. I don't know, maybe they were thinking disco was no longer part of the scene?? Anyway cool song!

Nice references, Len 911. I forgot Sly sang. Ha! You might be revealing your generation though!
We were aiming more for an electro-pop style a la LCD Soundsystem who definitely borrow sounds from the 80's, no doubt about that. LCD Soundsystem recently had a song in the Sandra Bullock movie "The Heat" so I know that sound isn't passe...yet.
The ironic thing is that all the referenced songs are styles that sound very dated. If I had tried producing my song in any of those styles then it certainly would've sounded dated and out of place in a current Miami city montage.

Disco generation Very true Very true also that the ala's were dated, I'm not familiar with Pitbull, but I think they call the other examples listed contemporary country today, lol! You are probably ahead of your time, tomorrow will perhaps be disco country. The Sly Prince Parliament Funkadelic country is even further into the future!realdoyle wrote:Nice references, Len 911. Cool song.
I think it just comes down to the screener not seeing this as right for the montage scenes mentioned. The listing definitely implies that the reference tracks are for lyrics, not necessarily style.
Best,
Casey

Casey might be correct-
Its incredibly tough to know- and being this nebulous very tough to understand what the screener was seeing or hearing.
These are the types of listings that 'can' be frustrating when you think you are giving what is wanted but in the end aren't really sure what that was.

Re: MY Miami - Returned and I STRONGLY DISAGREE (U140205MI)
Nice song. You asked for feedback, so here is mine:
So, they listed several stylistic references. That doesn't mean that every style is ok. Your styles were none of the referenced ones.
Also, the change to latin may have DQd it because it forces a story line where they may not want one.
The referenced songs were, or attempted to be, hip in their day. Maybe they wanted something that attempted to be currently hip.
Besides the lack of focus on vocals, A and B material, and being dated, it could be the title, and lyric.
For a song about community, do you think they want something about MY miami?

Bummer.
I listened to the song twice... just for fun.
I would have forwarded it.

Re: Miami - Returned and I STRONGLY DISAGREE (U140205MI)
Out of the twenty or so "disagrees" I've read, this is the first one that I side with the artist. Generally, i side with the reviewer after the first bar and a half)
But this song is cool.
I would have forwarded it.
While I agree with flaminghakama that those reasons may have ultimately been dealbreakers for the sup, I don't think they were valid reasons for not forwarding.
Tune's awesome and it's got montage written all over it. it had a shot.
Given what i know, I'd have forwarded.

Re: Miami - Returned and I STRONGLY DISAGREE (U140205MI)
Hello dear Joshua,
Sorry about this harsh disappointment. I have not read the Comments above yet. I am going to try to find a ... "Why ?
Perhaps may be, the Mix did not achieve to make the Vocals stay loud and clear. I find it somewhat not easy to hear all the words, and obviously for this particular Listing, the words are very important.
My favourite Referenced Song advertising Miami is the one performed by Will Smith. For all that Will Smith speaks and sings the words pretty fast, however ... I understood them all !
So although Musically ... "Miami is my City" is very very good, and the Vocals completely appropriate, the words are not enough upfront and distinct.
Sure, I would love TAXI to give you another chance, a little bit more time to work this out, especially that this Listing is unusual and unique because of its emphasis on Miami, so your Composition is special and unique, and cannot be "recycled" as such !!
By the way, why did you put "Paris" in the Tags ?
