Well, I useta work the nightshift
When they’d closed the doors
I picked up beer cups and programs
Swept and mopped the floor
And I’d take five after midnight
With my old six-string
Sip the bourbon in my thermos
Try to write and sing
One night I heard echoes from the empty stage
Lonesome as the whistlin’ wind through desert sage
Then a stranger touched my six-string
With a hand of light
He said, “If you’ll share your whiskey
I’ll teach you to write”

He’s the Phantom of the Opry
And he came down from heaven’s grace
He’s the Phantom of the Opry
And he haunts that holy place

I said, “I’d be grateful if you’d
Help me write a hit
I’ve been needing one good payday
Since I was a kid”
He said, “Songs are things of myst’ry
Dollars can’t define
And my best were lonely teardrops
Bottled up in rhyme
God knows I’m still fightin’ vices of the flesh
So I can’t go home with bourbon on my breath
I’ll take one more sip of this world
And I’ll tell you plain
Songs are life and when they’re over
Only soul remains”

And he left this echo down the hall
