Yes, that is indeed fascinating, our differences, our different approaches, our different modes.

My Cousin in France for instance, Catherine LARA, does a huge Musical project about once a year.
And she proceeds a bit similar to Hector when he achieved his project with his Latin Jazz Ensemble.
So a project is usually 12 Songs on a CD. Completely pristine and pro. Takes one or two years to do !

Now, we here at TAXI, are moving according to a different mode.

The Listings call us, and we have a matter of days to create, or re create something that we were inspired to do, but more importantly, something that we understand will suit the Supervisor needs ...
So our creative tempo is different.

Food for thought.

Played live,often seven days a week,sometimes 2/3 times a day.

Produced a body of work of quality and quantity of epic proportions.

Good post Peter!
Russell has a great grasp on it...
I have 10 to 20 ideas tracked that I consider "sketches"
Collaborating has really helped keep things feeling the pressure of deadlines
Focusing on the finish line gets me way more productive
When I'm stalemated I just open up the sketchbook and doodle some more
Next stalemate I'm going to spend a day making Different Template Versions
Now that I see the repeating patterns of Compression/Reverb/Groupings in Cubase
I know if I dedicate a day to making 6 or so different templates
I'll speed up this whole mixing process!

Russell, How many templates have you created for workflow?
Or anyone for that matter???

Since I work 12 hour shifts every other day, I usually force myself to finish at least one track every day I have off during the week. It can range from 1-3 for me, depending on the weather, low pressure gives me headaches and I end up making beats that give me more headaches.

I really try not to leave any tracks dangling, unfinished because I hate re-opening the session and figuring out where my head was at when I started.

Although, sometimes getting the music sketched out after I get home from work, gives me a fresh start on the lyrics on my day off the next morning.

But having tons of ideas on the go, I can't really see as being a bad thing, you have a lot to draw from in terms of deciding which ones you like the most to develop further, or which one you think will match any current listings/requests.

I'd say getting at least 1-2 tracks finished per week is a healthy target to keep you from obsessing about those squirrels too much.

We are talking about literal squirrels right? It's not a colloquial term for a pretty girl or something, is it??? Cuz you know, girl does kinda rhyme with squirrel.

i've got 150+ carcases in my audio drive. Most of them are fleshed out reasonably, in many cases a hour or two away from being done.

I always title the project with the date, and the style in which I believed I was writing (sometimes I am way off there lol).

then after I finish working on it, I always bounce a quick mp3 of the piece. That way later I can go through the almost made it projects and listen to see if I hear anything that brings some new ideas and start in again.

but going back through them, sometimes its just fresher and easier to start a new piece.

I have one logic template that I use that has a bazillion tracks and fx routings in it that is meant to cover every base, and Logic has a quick way of deleting a batch of tracks that aren't used, so I can pare it down pretty quickly.

Neat Andy, I do some of the same things. The MP3 of the "not so done" stuff
is a great idea...thanks!
Never worried much about templates though....I always just build as I go.
Great stuff everyone
