90's Fun Pop Rock. Does this qualify?

Post by PeterD » Tue Apr 15, 2014 7:45 pm

Hey guys!

I'm thinking this: https://soundcloud.com/moanakeiki/next-time-2012

For this:
1990's sounding POP ROCK INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS are needed by a MUSIC LIBRARY actively pitching to Film and TV. This company has already signed many TAXI members and has successfully placed their music in some popular TV shows. We recently ran this as Dispatch listing #D140321PR, but they're interested in hearing more Tracks because they need more! They're on the hunt for Mid-to-Up-Tempo Tracks in the general stylistic ballpark of bands like Punchline, Third Eye Blind, Everclear, etc. Quoting the source, "We want Pop/Rock Instrumentals in a 'song format.' We need to hear an intro, verse, chorus, verse, etc." All Tracks should have a typical Rock band line-up of electric guitars, bass, and drums. Instrumentals with light keyboard pads will be accepted. The overall mood should be upbeat, fun, and rockin'. Instrumentals that have a '90s style, sound, and vibe will work best. It's okay if your Track has been recently recorded, as long as it sounds authentic to the '90s era Pop/Rock that's been requested. They DO NOT want any Tracks that are dark, moody, grungy, heavily distorted, or stiff and MIDI-driven. All submissions should be at least two minutes long. Buttoned endings are encouraged but not required. Easy edit points will also be appreciated, but not required. Do not submit any material with unauthorized samples of other artists' songs, sounds, or any other form of media. Broadcast Quality is needed (great sounding home recordings are fine). This Library offers an EXCLUSIVE three-year agreement ... bla bla bla

I feel it's close, but something's "off ..." :?
Any ideas?
Thanks for listening!!
:D :D

Hey Peter!
It might work... :)
It feels/sounds a bit muffled...
Could just be some instruments that need to come up in volume.
At 0:21 the rhythm guitar needs to come up to the db of the opening lead guitar
At that same point the bass sounds midi driven, you might pull it down some right thru that section.
The acoustic has a very nice tone!
You could try bringing it up a bit till the lead comes back in.
Here's what the drums sound like to me...
Kick has a nice pattern, could boost the low end of it some
The rest of the kit (except cymbals) sounds like they are all in a reverb wash that is killing some good tones
ie... I can't here the bight of the snare...

It is a Feel Good Tune!
Is it one you played in a band?

Hello dear Peter,

I am listening to : "Next Time".

I marvel at well you followed the (many) Listing requirements indeed ! Woah, you did it to the letter.

My impression is that it sounds very well like a 1990s Track. It is all there, ... but because you expressed a doubt, a little doubt, however, I think it lacks power in the Volume.

But this is all that I can see, or hear :D

This is a perfect HomeWork, dear Peter, I shall give you ... A+ :P

Thank you Catherine!! :D

I'm happy the overall feel is somewhat convincing.

Thanks Cass!!

This is one I did a few years ago (all me and looped drums). I totally agree that the snare in the loop isn't popping like it should. Very little reverb on that track too. It might be in the way that loop was sampled. Maybe I can add a snare track over the existing drums to maintain some of those ghost notes.
I also think I've got some eq issues with the guitars. Very muddy indeed!

Hope I can clean it up before it's due Wednesday night ...
Thanks again,
:D

Tune's good, David – bang on target, in that respect, I would have thought.

There might be a little more definition going into the first chorus – it's a little too 'one level' for my ears.

Peter,

I agree with Cass that it sounds a bit muffled, but it shouldn't take too much to clean up the mix.

For some reason it made me think of a scene from Beverly Hills 90210, so you're right on target!

Thanks Nick, John, and Andy!!

Andy, I just updated the mix seconds after you posted that Matchbox Twenty link.

More punch in the snare, a lil less mud in the guitars.
Something's up with the bass though ... Can't figure that out. Not sure if it's loud and just needs some compression/EQ.

UGH!!! :D

yeah sounds better already.

the bass is muddy to me. the 200-300hz range could use a cut of 1-2 db. a little parallel overdrive or distortion could help with some articulation.

and if you haven't compressed it, yeah I would def try and put a little articulation and front end on the note, try a longer attack rather than shorter.

also when the bass plays, I cannot hear the kick at all. is it playing the same rhythm? if so, fine I guess. otherwise it would be nice to hear it.

I think that did it, Andy! :D

Bass is pretty much just picking on the straight 1/8 notes. Tightened up the low/mids, changed some MIDI notes, tweaked compression, and the bass seems to pop now. Hopefully the brighter tone lets the kick come through better?
