Greetings.
Feels odd, yet fun, to be re-engaging here; not done so since my PC died back on Jan 7th.
Despite great help and advice from the forum Wise Guys (the good kind), didn't have the funds to go the mac route... yet.
An old PC tower was rescued from being tossed, and given to me. At the minimum, there's now a home desktop from which I can manage basic communications.
I read the blog wherein it was reported (thanks KC) that flash can really slow a machine; and would likely seriously cripple an old eMachine like this. This old PC has very minimal specs, I'm wondering what other service might I download (free?) so that I can participate in the Ustream on Monday nights; like the html5 thing? Pardon my non-techy; don't really know what that is.
Cheers.
Peter

Re: re: alternative to adobe flash? for PC-viewing taxi tv?
Peter welcome back!
I just set up an old emachines with 512MB of ram to browse the internet. All is free.
Puppy Precise linux OS. What you do is 1) download iso 2)download free iso burner 3)burn iso onto blank cd or dvd. 4) turn on computer, "e" screen appears 5)press key F10 (or whatever screen says is the boot key
6)choose up or down with arrows cd/dvd player, enter. That will install puppy linux os
http://puppylinux.org/main/How%20to%20d ... 0Puppy.htm
If at another occasion you wish to boot up in windows, do nothing after turning power on. Windows is the default OS.
Seamonkey browser is the one written into the program, but you will want to install the latest version, so you will basically have 2 installs, new one will be Seamonkey portable.
http://shinobar.server-on.net/puppy/opt/
scroll down to these two links, seamonkey-portable-0.4.tar.gz
and seamonkey-portable-HELP.html (that's the install directions)
*you will definitely want to do this as the default, older version hangs sometimes and you have to do a reboot.
So, basically you will still be using flash, however, because the puppy linux os and seamonkey browser are so small, it is very quick. It is much faster than my newer machine was on xp, because xp os was so large. hth
