STutter edits.....

Post by CHuckmott » Sat May 17, 2014 8:56 am

Dies anyone know of a simple way to do stutter edits in pro tools , and reverse edits? Similar to what is being done here ? http://vimeo.com/90658762

Without running out and buying , say, isotope stutter edit?

Good Question Chuck!
My guess is...
Each track has it's own sidechained noise gate controlled by it's own automation, triggered by a midi track for each!
In the middle of the tune it seemed to get more pronounced to where there was dead silence in between the stutters
That's why I'm guessing Noise Gate
and because of the differing intensities in the Gate, I'm guessing the Noise gate itself is automated to increase and decrease

If I couldn't figure it out,
...this would take forever...
I would find the loudest sound I would want to hear
such as one of the guitar notes
Use the Recorded Wave of just that note
make a copy of it, Timestretch it shorter by 25 - 50% making sure to use a timestretch setting that keeps pitch intact,
Then reverse the copy and put it in front of the original
Set up a delay
Loop the song and play with the delay settings and volume automation till you mimic the effect.

Now Will Someone Please Help This Poor Misguided Soul (me) and Chuck as how to do it quicker? Please!?!

I think that's exactly the point of Izotope Stutter Edit, to play with stutter without having to spend tedious amounts of editing time.

I actually reached out to the library owner, who put out the request, and is a pretty accomplished composer/producer, and is basically saying g the same thing, without the program, all you can really do is chop it up, but end up with a lot of pops and clicks....done this already , and in that he is right. Cass is probably correct too in how to go about it.Leaves me a few choices 1.) Buy Stutter Edit, which I may find putting to limited use after this , program is around $250 2.) Tough it out with Cass suggestions 3.) Take a pass on this particular request, or 4.) Submit without those particular suggestions (probably a waste of my time and the library's, as he will likely ask for them anyway, leading us back to square one). Silly me, spent about 2 weeks on this already, but can always submit as is elsewhere.

Heya Chuck,
Don't have Izo Stutter, but wanted it, so I watched some videos of it on youtube...there's plenty of them there.
Do you have Komplete? There's "The Finger" effect it there that can do something like this, but I've never used it much, haven't really dived in there to see what it can do.
Also, when you're chopping up clips, to get rid of the pops that sometimes happen, don't know what DAW you use, but in Sonar, after you chop a clip, you just hold your cursor over the end of the clip, and a little fade line pops up to adjust the fade time...kinda like fader automation for each cut. Works like a charm.
I'm sure most DAWs have something like that.
Anyhow, probably things you already know, so just disregard if so :D
Good luck on your quest

Cheers,
Steve

So Cool Len, but, real thanks for growing my wish list  :D
I'm gonna try some of these demos, thanks!
Do you know if they are easy to go from demo to user after buying?
No having to delete the demo b4 installing the real one type thing?
Thanks
Steve

Yes Steve, very easy and no deleting.

Many of the plugins are sort of duplicative, by that I mean if you have the MMultibandchorus, it's not really necessary with all the presets and modulators to buy the flanging or tremolo... It's mostly for convenience sake, like the multibands, 5 or 6 bands, when you can have 5 or 6 bands doing different things in one plugin, or you could make multiple tracks and by using filters, achieve similar results, just more setting up using more plugins and tracks...

Otoh, if you already have a particular effect, it may be that you just want to modulate it with LFO's then maybe something like an LFO tool might be more what you are looking for.

Many of these type modulators like LFO's and envelopes are integrated in synthesizers.

In a way, you could say that modulators are an "automatic automation" process, if that makes sense. Tremolo (variation in amplitude one), can be achieved by using a tremolo effect, manually changing the volume in the daw, or by using an LFO to control the volume.
