Saints & Sinners ©2014 Robert George BMI

Ev’rybody knew what kind of man that Nathan was
When he’d walk in that café he’d rant n rave n cuss
Grab that sweet young waitress with his greasy, grimy mitts
Bitch about the coffee and then call her “sugar tits”

And time keeps rollin’ on
And the line gets thinner
Between what’s right and wrong
And the saints and sinners

One night Nathan got too drunk and robbed a Quik-Stop store
Hit someone while driving off too fast in his ole Ford
He came back and then made sure that she was still alive
He dialed 911 and stayed with her till help arrived

O time keeps rollin’ on
And the line gets thinner
Between what’s right and wrong
And the saints and sinners

Well, the guilt was more than he could manage
In his prison cell, all he did was dwell upon the damage
He’d inflicted with his ole Ford
Midnights found him worthless and dejected
He could hardly cope, secretly he hoped he’d be rejected
By the Tennessee parole board

Nathan figgered if he cried and claimed he’d been reborn
They’d still stamp “DENIED” in big red letters on his form
So he stood and told his story thinkin’ they’d just laugh
Then a lady hobbled in to speak on his behalf

Cos time keeps rollin’ on
And the line gets thinner
Between what’s right and wrong
And the saints and sinners

And now ev’ry morning he sits in a window booth
Birds’re on the wing and coffee’s strong but smooth
Though that waitress is still limpin’ on her steel leg brace
When she walks by Nathan all he sees is heaven’s grace

O time keeps rollin’ on
And the line gets thinner
Between what’s right and wrong
And the saints and sinners
