Luthor picked a crazy day to show up late
Cops’d swarmed that Hilton Head hotel,
Barkin’ orders…screamin’ on the their cells
Grillin’ ev’ry maintenance man and clerk and maid

Someone robbed the rubies from the hotel vault
But those folks were honest as they come,
He knew cos he’d vetted ev’ry one
And that jewel heist wasn’t some poor night clerk’s fault

He’d been a cop and then a hotel dick
And he knows crime doesn’t pay
Yeah, it’d take a master diamond thief
To make a clean getaway

Luthor told his boss to simmer down and chill
He had buddies on the Charleston force,
And he’d heard it from a solid source
That the thief had hopped a red-eye to Brazil

He was down there meeting with a well known fence
Luthor could just book a morning flight,
He’d be back home in a coupla nights
And return the rubies at his own expense

To make a clean getaway

So he got a flight to Rio de Janeiro
Took his passport from his tiny leased apartment
Then he vanished on the four winds like a sparrow
Far from any Hilton Head police department

He’d been gone awhile before his boss got wise
Sold the rubies to his fence as planned,
Has a Caipirinha in his hand
Lounging out below the beach front Rio skies
