My first Royalty Check!

Post by VanderBoegh » Fri Jul 11, 2014 1:12 pm

Cross another line off my musical bucket list... I've just received my first ASCAP royalty check! This is from my one and only placement so far - a 25 second snippet on the MTV show "Catfish". Go figure, that 25 seconds nearly gave me back all the money I just spent on renewing a 2-year Taxi membership. SUH-WEEET!!! Cross your fingers that MTV keeps re-running that episode. Looks like it's played 19 times so far. Keep 'em coming!!

Big thanks to Michael and everyone at Taxi. I always wondered if I could really make it this far, and I now feel like my dreams are coming true. Slowly but surely, friends!

~~Matt

Yes, they rerun the hell out of that stuff. Most of the cable channels do, but especially MTV & VH1. I think you'll be seeing money from that placement for at least a couple more years. It'll of course get smaller and smaller each pay period, because after awhile you'll start seeing some of the placements come from overseas reruns which pay less. But hey, it's money for something you've already done so there's nothing wrong with that!

And besides, you'll be long past having written and placed tons more stuff by then anyway so it'll hardly matter. 8-)

Thanks everyone! It's been a little over 2.5 years since I started in on this television music business, and doing all productions myself. It's been a helluva growing experience, and a lot of doubt along the way, but I guess I can finally call myself a "professional" now, haha. Hopefully I can follow in the footsteps of many of the Taxi legends and watch placements and royalties grow like crazy from here. Every journey starts from nothing. One step at a time...

Bob, the song that was used on Catfish is this one: https://soundcloud.com/vanderboegh/unid ... wcase-pack . It's one of my earlier songs from about 2 years ago, and so the quality is pretty sub-par compared to what I do now. I'm actually really surprised it was used at all, but I guess when the volume is ducked down low enough underneath dialogue, a lot of the quality blemishes are hidden. Oh, it's from the episode where a lesbian girl pretends she's the rapper Bow Wow. I can't remember when exactly the song is used, but it's during one of the detective'y parts of the show.
