Whoo, late to the party here.
Killer all over this, the writing, the vocal and gtr performances. Whoo hoo it rocks HARD!

I would really stick with the AWESOME mix advice, Richard gave. Especially with gtrs a great as these, they'll seduce you, and lure you into the belly of a volume bomb. This genre is all about vocals and lyrics, so what ever you do, make sure everything is centrered around hearing that 110%.

To my ears the acoustic gtr coming in from the start and throughout, could be brought down a bit (maybe 4-5db). In general I found the gtrs too loud in this mix, overshadowing the vox. I suggest do the Craw, and then automate where you'd like to hear the gtrs more afterwards.

It means a sequence where you first concentrate on reaching a static mix where nothing stands out, but the levels are evenly balanced, and then work on making things stand out with automation, in the pockets where there's room for it. You'll be much more in control that a way, imo.

ALRIGHT!!

I've been guilted back into the fray.. SO!!! I took down the acoustic and guitars in general. I tightened up the harmonies and thinned them a bit.

My ears are now maxed on this song. Sailing blind.

Vocal is SOOO much better without the panning/swimming thing. Sounds a little bit harsh though, hard to dial the eq in so it cuts thru the mix without being harsh. Could be just my ears- I'm no good at determing what frequency that might be, but I'd sweep a narrow band around to try to find it.
I'm hearing a general lack of low end energy as well, especially in the bass guit. (is it just me?)
This tune really is awesome Steve, Nashville needs this! You're doing great work Graham! don't pay no attention to me. (especially if others disagree...)
Cheers! -Rob

Graham and Stevie,

I only had time for a listen tonight and to read about half the comments (which I learned some stuff from myself). But, I wanted to jump in and say holy cow :!: , what a great song, musicianship, and everything. I'll keep checking in to see what happens with this one.

Rob, I hear it in my monitors as well (the HighZs)

Graham, it appears to be all in the acoustic git
notice that it doesn't happen in the Bridge
Somewhere in the 10k to 20k range the EQ on the git needs to come down
I don't know how many -DBs to pull
As an avid acoustic player I love the jangle too :)
But please please please, don't damage your ears!!!!
That HighZ can do it all too easily

The cymbals sound fantastic!

Here is a link to a YouTube I just watched re: mixing bass guitar

On behalf of Lil' S. J. I say thank you Rob, Bob and Cass

Now, concerning that high frequency. Amazing you picked up on that boys... pirdee subtle.. but I think I found it. You were right, Cass. You have passed the test my son. It was the acoustic. Your final test ? Explain what you were IMPLYING WITH THE BASS VIDEO!! OH LORD DO I HAVE TO LOOK INTO THAT NOW!!! if you should choose to accept it....

:D

Most recent rendition...

Any difference is gonna imperceptible to all but the most finely tuned ears...from which I humbly disqualify myself. I only know (think) that sharp ringing is gone...

Hah!
re: the bass ...didn't want to give it away!
I figured you would watch the video and learn how valuable a lesson it gives
The first time I applied the high-pass and low-pass filters the way that Pensado showed us...(that was like.... yesterday)
...my bass sound got better instantly

There had been mentioned in an earlier post that the bass was sorta hidden...
the filters really help to give it space in the mix an un-hide it

The only other thing that stands out to me in monitors is the LowZs of the acoustic
Maybe you could back them off a hair EQ or Filter
and automate them even lower the very moment of the first bass note
As acoustic players we love the deep tones
It's hard to cut them back
But it does muddy up the mix

Love Ya G! :D

Cass, Bob - thanks guys!

Graham, it sounds fab to me mate!
I am a little embarrased because I don't know how to re-pay the kindness you've done me, spending so much time on this track.
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, now please get on with your superb songs! :D :D :D
Very best of regards
