When too-perfect turns into 'sterile'...

Yeah, it is easier than ever to tweak the life out of things. That said, I think in any era of music you could find examples of lifeless, sterile songs and even bands/artists. I'm going to get totally slammed for this, but for me, although I totally appreciate the musicianship and songwriting prowess and the blood, sweat and tears that went into crafting these studio gems, to me (and I'm sure only me) Steely Dan leaves me cold, I get no gut level emotional reaction to their music. I find myself marvelling at the perfection and the purity of tone but, like listening to a perfectly sampled VI, it can lack vibe to me.

Honestly, most music isn't that special.

It doesn't matter if it is played by humans with imperfections or recorded on computers with the latest techniques. I just try to derive a basic entertainment value from music. I get my emotional kicks from doing physical things like playing sports or hanging out with friends.

The music sometimes gets in the way of life. It is summer and making and listening to music takes a backseat to getting outdoors and having real fun.

There is the other side of the coin also. When I hear someone say notch out about 400hz and that ought to help, I understand, but cant do it. (would love to hear the vox more clearly) I have no idea how to use quantization, but my poor timing might benefit there.
