Damn, I love that lead guitar. Ridiculously great sound. Great live sound on the drums, too. Only thing I'd change about this mix is to bring the "response" BG vox down in the second pre-chorus and in the last chorus. They seem to jump out on top of the lead a little bit.

Lead vocal reminds me a little of Billy Vera ("At This Moment");
and the harmonies a little reminiscent of Steely Dan.

Beginning to feel like a broken record here: usually wishing the drums were more 'up-in-front' in volume and presence... (especially the snare) but that's probably a personal taste, and in the minority.

Wouldn't it be cool (but could be equally disastrous) if a mix review site pulled up the actual tracks, and us 'wannabee' engineers could just tweak the eq's and faders, etc... and send it back and ask, like the optometrist: "better like this? or better like this?" :?
(nah... that aint gonna happen).

You keep pumping out these cool songs/tunes... :)

fwiw: here's an "ala" of a great collaboration... and noting where the drums sit in this mix:

Great sound.
The only thing that leaped out was the backing vocals in the chorus was a bit too loud.
I might try adding a bit more reverb and shaving off the top end to push them back as well.
It's a dry mix, but there is nothing wrong with that.
On some dry mixes you can try adding a room verb to the master.
The right reverb setting can add some sparkle to the overall sound.
It's a personal taste thang ;)
Rich.

Great Stuff Craw!
Everything sounds great to me...
I agree with Fun about one thing, the Snare
Right now it sounds like he played a Deep Snare with the snares almost off
Was there a mic on the bottom of the Snare or just a top mic???
To 99% of the listeners the snare is great the way it is!
The other 01% want to hear some of the bottom mic for it's presence... :P
You Rock!

Richard, I can't come up with anything constructive. But listening I thought these things.

The drums sound great. I think beefier than in some of the others you added real drums to. They all work in their own way, but in this one they sounded particularly good. (In the 99% here.)

Your voice sounded in top form. Really really good.

Tasty guitar stuff throughout. Just awesome.

Your mixes, and this one is fresh in my mind, are just so darn crystal clear. Everything just sits nicely in there.

Oh, and if that's not enough, I just love the fact that the tune is 2:59 long! Say what you gotta say, say it well, and get the heck out.

Sorry I couldn't help any.

Gives all of the rest of us a great realization of this is how they are sposed to sound like.

Love the guitar work in between. Very smooth

thanks for the quick and helpful replies everyone, because we have to wrap up the mix on this one today and move on.

we do have a mic under the snare as well, and will focus on that today.

appreciate the accolades, but as i've mentioned before, my friend al dequina sings most of this particular catalog, and my co-writer chuck hall handles a lot of the fine gittar pickin' ...cuz he can just play it better (and thus we record faster). the right channel playing a few of you mentioned was done by him. it's funny, we often end up writing each other's guitar parts. i write one, he plays it, he writes one, i play it. it's fun to have a co-writing situation in which you are both the other half of each other's brains. of course, we've been hangin' out for 30 years so that may have something to do with it.

incidentally...r.i.p. johnny winter

Awesome Crawdaddy!
You guys are really cranking out these live drum mixes, great job!
I vote that the BGs are a bit hot too, especially certain answer lines like "we used to run" etc.
Great stuff man! love it. -Rob
