That old hound dog gave his poor heart one last push
Walked off past the windmill by the briar bush
And they’d fought like bitter enemies for years
But he didn’t chase that cat with chewed up ears
He just took that crooked path across the rise
Through a candy-painted cloud of butterflies
Then the sun bowed low and day grew dim
And a tiny shadow followed him
Where the branches bend and blackbirds caw
Then it found that old and weary hound
Layin’ silent on some grassy ground
And it tried to wake him with its paw
O that hound had gone there alone
Like it was time to reflect
And the woods went quiet and still
As a sign of respect
He lay beneath a blanket of sky
On a cool bed of clover
But did he go there to die or go there to live
On a country crossover
Now old Larry useta sit out on his porch
Sip his ‘shine and listen to his hound dog snore
But tonight he walked off with a lonely wish
Leaving teardrops in a dusty supper dish
And an amber shadow watched him from afar
That had not been cast that night by moon or stars
And the west wind echoed whippoorwills
Near the winding path across the hill
On his weary journey to be free
Then he lay down and his life grew dim
And his loyal hound dog guided him
On the bridge across eternity
O that man had gone there alone
Like it was time to reflect
And the woods went quiet and still
As a sign of respect
He lay beneath a blanket of sky
On a cool bed of clover
But did he go there to die or go there to live
On a country crossover
On a country crossover
Yes, they both had gone there alone
Like it was time to reflect
And the woods went quiet and still
As a sign of respect
They lay beneath a blanket of sky
On a cool bed of clover
But did they go there to die or go there to live
On a country crossover
On a country crossover
A country crossover…
