The Girl I Left Behind ©2014 Robert George BMI
Well, we’d just been married for a coupla years
When I signed up and they sent me overseas
We’d been goin’ broke from tryin’ ta work that farm
Crops were failing…storms had torn the fence and barn
So although I was headin’ off to war
I was worried for
The girl I left behind, the girl I left behind
I was ridin’ in a truck outside our base
On a night patrol with Pvt. Wendy Slade
We took fire and I felt that truck explode
Pvt. Slade was lyin’ still beside the road
As I crawled off through the dusty clouds
All I thought about…was
The girl I left behind
The girl I left behind
She was by herself
Lord knows she had no one else
The girl I left behind
I had left a blood trail in the sand
Low on ammo then my rifle jammed
I prepared to meet my Maker in the sky
I survived that enemy attack
When a shadow fought them back
And I thank heaven I was rescued by
The girl I left behind
The girl I left behind
She was by herself
Lord knows she had no one else
The girl I left behind
When I walked the gravel road to our old farm
I was greeted by a sturdy fence and barn
And I stood beside the well and kissed my wife
In my absence I could see the farm had thrived
And though I’d returned from war a stronger man
I’m no stronger than
The girl I left behind
The girl I left behind
She was by herself
Lord knows she had no one else
The girl I left behind
The girl I left behind
The girl I left behind…
