Instrumental Cue Production

Post by TheElement » Tue Aug 19, 2014 7:32 pm

So I was watching this weeks taxi TV and Michael really explained what a cue was very well. So basically its like an 8 bar motif that is spread out for like 2 minutes or so and elements are added and subtracted every say 8 bars?

Thanks for enlightening a newbie! 8-)

Dean K just finished this book and made it available for sale. If you are not familiar with his work........ he's everywhere, longtime TAXI member, and a really sweet guy as well.

re: your description -

well saying its 8 bars might be a little restrictive. It might be 4 bars. It could possibly be more too.

but yes, 2 mins is a good length to shoot for.

yes form wise - most instrumental cues are either

a 4, 8, 12 or maybe 16 bar A that is repeated A, A, A, A, A, A, A (or whatever # of repetitions of A make over 2 mins) and button ending

or

A similar formula with A and B sections - A, B, A, B, A, B button ending

songs often have C sections (middle 8's or bridges) but instrumental cues usually don't.

Here's a video from John Fulford ( who was on Taxi TV last week). The 2nd half of the video shows you how he produced a cue that was used as the closing theme for an animated TV series.

The whole track is just under 2mins long.
