+1 Proper Gain staging has not only improved my mixes but has also cut down the time I spend mixing a song.

Thanks for sharing. Lots to think about here. Gotta figure out how this applies to Reason.

One thing that's helped is that I've been able to set up a Macro command on Studio One, where all tracks are normalized, then gain reduced (or increased) to -12 db. I also start my mix by setting my faders to -6db.

All my individual tracks and group tracks are sent to a submix where I thrown in my overall compression and limiter. That submix then goes to my Master track.

This is an easy way for me to keep my mix from clipping while still staying loud.

The simple version is that if you're operating at 24 bits, it's unnecessary to tickle the orange and red parts of your meters all the time, and it could result in distortions at the summing buss or nasty intersample peaks that can give postproduction and mastering folks headaches, later in the process. :D

Thanks good article. little long and technical but basically start your mix channel levels at -6 db and turn up monitors. sounds like a plan. 8-)
