Ridiculous solution to my dead Macbook Pro display

Post by bobporri » Thu Aug 28, 2014 5:32 pm

I have had a dead display on my Macbook Pro early 2008 for 3 months. I have had the repair done before and it was $150 at a local repair place. Basically reasonable except this has happened 3 times in the last year. I read online about this problem and a home remedy but didn't have the "guts" to try it. Well, last night I got the guts. I plugged it in, turned in on (pilot lights still lit, just no monitor and full startup would fail. Here's the ridiculous part. Apparently there is some problem with the connections of the chipset (and I don't know what that means if anything). But once started up, I followed the home remedy instruction to turn the computer over, put a quilt on it, and leave it to basically cook for 25 minutes (the instructions said 1.5 hours or so but I chickened out. It got very hot even with 25 minutes. Apparently hot enough to reconnect the loose solder or whatever because after the Macbake it started up and has been fine. Unbelievable but true. It sort of makes sense, but this is just sooooo stupid that it actually worked. This was a fairly risky approach, could have caused a fire I guess if you do this and forget it is cooking, but I am just thrilled to be using it again and had to exuberate (Is that a word? Spellcheck doesn't think so.) somewhere. So how stupid is it that this worked? (You don't have to tell me how stupid I am to have tried it  ).

Woah dear Bob, what an amazing Story.

You followed your hunches and you ... won ! Despite the fear, and I understand the fear, yes I do.

And you "jubilate", you are now in a state described as : "exuberance" quite understandably. :) ;)

"exuberate" is a mix of two, and is absolutely brilliant ! I love it when people invents new words.

PS :

jubilate |ˈdʒuːbɪleɪt|
verb [ intrans. ] archaic
show great happiness; rejoice : sing and jubilate aloud before God.
ORIGIN mid 17th cent.: from Latin jubilat- ‘called out,’ from the verb jubilare, used by Christian writers to mean ‘shout for joy.’
Jubilate |ˌjoōbəˈlātē; ˌyoōbəˈlätā| |ˈdʒubəˈleɪdi| |ˈdʒuːbɪˈlɑːteɪ|
noun [in sing. ]
Psalm 100 (99 in the Vulgate), beginning Jubilate deo “rejoice in God,” esp. as used as a canticle in the Anglican service of matins.
• a musical setting of this.
ORIGIN Latin, ‘shout for joy!,’ imperative of jubilare (see jubilate ).

exuberant |ɪgˈzjuːb(ə)r(ə)nt| |ɛg-|
adjective
filled with or characterized by a lively energy and excitement : giddily exuberant crowds | flamboyant and exuberant architectural invention.
• growing luxuriantly or profusely : exuberant foliage.
DERIVATIVES
exuberance |ɪgˈzub(ə)rəns| |ɛgˈzub(ə)rəns| noun
exuberantly |ɪgˈzub(ə)rəntli| |ɛgˈzub(ə)rəntli| adverb
ORIGIN late Middle English (in the sense [overflowing, abounding] ): from French exubérant, from Latin exuberant- ‘being abundantly fruitful,’ from the verb exuberare (based on uber ‘fertile’ ).

Hahahaha, nice work, Bob. You've got more guts than I do! I tried a home remedy for fixing the headphone jack on my iPod and ruined the entire thing... Had to buy a new iPod as a result. Just call me Mr. Chicken from here on out!

Glad it worked for you. Crazy tactic, haha.

Mojobone, thanks.

Catherine, WOW, that was fun reading through your response! :) I appreciate it. And I'm glad I'm still using the computer.

Matt, if this was my main DAW computer, I think I would have turned full chicken on the situation also :)

The other approach... placing it on the BBQ grill, and flipping it after just 5 minutes...
may have achieved similar results; but dealing with the grill marks may not have been as desirable.
At least you would had a nice story to 'splain to the grand-kids...
"Popi... why does your computer looked like a grilled salmon?" :?

A little... VERY LITTLE... attempt at holiday humor.
We did have some nice grilled, fresh and locally-caught yellow fin tuna; yum!
Hope you're chillin' & grillin' instead of workin' - Happy UnLabor Day. :)
Cheers.
