Whiskey Finds a Way

Whiskey Finds a Way ©2014 Robert George BMI

Well, they made our small east Texas country dry in ‘59
Granpa tricked his Chevy, built a still and started runnin’ ‘shine
Then a lawman got elected who was mean as Jonah Hex
He was gonna purge the county and take Oklahoma next

One night someone cut the brakes on Granpa’s souped up Chevrolet
As he lay there in the glass n flame n smoke,
Legends say the final words he spoke
Were “Whiskey finds a way”

Daddy took the business on and was rakin' in the green
Till some hippies got the land to plant a field of dreams
One of daddy’s drivers smoked a fat boy on a midnight run
Rolled his truck and lost a barrel out on Highway 21

Somehow lightnin’ struck that barrel just before the break of day
Acres of unlawful nature burned,
Winds were high when all those hippies learned
That whiskey finds a way

Yeah, that lawman wasn’t re-elected
And our moonshine business wouldn’t die
It was almost like we were protected
By a good friend reachin’ from the sky
Last year I took over for my father
And we’ve got a high tone client list
Mayors, preachers and a self-help author
Plus a high-falootin’ scientist

Then a crazy guy moved in and started cookin’ somethin’ cruel
But he had no code and even started sellin’ near the school
One night someone left a jar of ‘shine outside his old Airstream
He was plastered when he blew his trailer lab to smithereens

Rumors flew around the barbershops and Rosalyn’s café
But there was no reason to be scared,
I sure didn’t put that moonshine there
But whiskey finds a way

Yet I now suspect that there’s a phantom Chevrolet
And it likes to take a midnight drive,
And somehow my Granpa’s still alive
Cos whiskey finds a way
Whiskey finds a way…
