Re: New Hick Hop Track Demo. Whatcha Think?
Hey Bob, I'm wondering if your drum beat is a bit too much standard country 4-on-the-floor. The hip hop influence just isn't there yet, but I think you could get there by changing up the kick pattern. Hip hop is very rhythmically driven, and it's pretty rare to find a never-changing quarter note approach. Might be worth messing around with to see if you can give more head-bobbin' street cred to the beat.

I'd suggest listening to the beats (especially the kick drum) in the song:

I think that's the kinda feel your going for?
Good luck with it

Hey, Bob,
Listening as I read, everything I think about this track has been stated already. I'm especially with Matt here – the trick is in the kick. Hip-hop derives from funk, which is all about what's NOT played, so less is more. Just need that funky skip in there. Great progress, and looking forward to hearing it develop.

Thanks Nick and everyone for your help on this. I have been talking to Andy gabrys in private messages and been taking his guidance also. I think I may have found the groove here. I dried up the guitars and banjos a lot. I think I got it or at least I hope so. Check it out.

without trying to be 'overkill'... think you're getting closer, but:
the kick and guitar just don't sound well-sync'd up, imho.
(maybe it's the bongo-sounding thing?);
fwiw: just take a listen to a few bits of this
starting at the 1:00 mark...

if I'm way off-base...

Well folks I have changed a lot in this. I tried to build going on, varied the drums and took lots of what you all have said in to account. I even added a synth. I am pretty pleased with the track now. Thanks for all of your help everyone. See if you all like this better.

Hey Bob,
Cool track; really digging the riffs and licks floating around. I think the new drums are better than the old drums--more hip hop, less rock--but I think they're coming off as too busy now. The hick-hop thing, to me, sits more with laid-back hip-hop than with the more aggressive type you're emulating here, with skittering kicks and the off-beat snare. I think of it less like country boys with gangstas in the rhythm section and more like likkered-up rednecks getting hold of a drum machine.
