Lower Quality On Taxi Homepage Song Upload

Post by TheElement » Mon Sep 15, 2014 7:08 pm

Hi Guys I dont no why but I just uploaded a 30 sec cue but for some reason the sound quality is not that good. It seems to have deteriorated due to the upload to Taxi. Normally quality sounds great on the Taxi song uploads.

Is this maybe as this is a 30 sec clip?

Thanks for any ideas! Its bugging me as I know the reviewers might not hear the songs actual recording quality from this upload.

The song is "Fastball" and on my Taxi homepage. Thanks!

You can try downloading it from your taxi page and compare it (size, metadata, sample rate / bit depth) to your original MP3 source file on your machine.. to see if it's a duplicate. This would help you to exclude that "something" happened to it after you uploaded it, like a conversion, for example. The Taxi system does not do a file conversion, to my knowledge, like Soundcloud does.

Also, try listening to your uploaded track side-by-side with your source file, using either another computer, or another set of headphones or monitors, etc. I guess there could be something in the streaming process that is degrading the sound, but if you download the file you uploaded, you can at least confirm the integrity of the uploaded file, which is what gets sent to the Taxi listing party when forwarded.

Screeners/reviewers listen to the same quality file that you uploaded; the lower-quality file is just for folks with slow/mobile internet connections. Most file-hosting sites work the same way, FYI. Even Souncloud, which lets you upload full-quality WAV files; if they click the player they get high-quality MP3, if they download they get the WAV file you uploaded. I'm pretty sure Taxi doesn't allow you to use WAV files, but you can actually upload higher bit rate files than the rules say you can, as long as you don't go over the file size limit, meaning shorter cues could be up to 320kB/s which is near CD quality.

Re: Mojo's comment -on Soundcloud, I have found when I upload an AIFF, and then listen to it, the file I am served to listen to is a fairly crappy-sounding 128k file (because I can download and inspect it, plus the file's name always includes "128".

I've had this happen a few times and I've contacted Taxi in the past. They've listened and told me it sounds fine (the screeners listen to the uploaded MP-3's, not the stream on the Taxi site I believe).

One thing I did discover was by clicking 'Use Variable Bit Rate Encoding (VBR)', which is an option in Logic when bouncing MP3's, the issue goes away for the most part.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Its done it again. Just uploaded another song and same thing. All the rest sound decent but "Fastball" and "Heat Wave" sound weird.

I haven't done anything different.

At least the screeners will download the original and hear the better quality. But now I don't want to give out my Taxi.com homepage. Might have to use Soundcloud or Bandcamp as my main homepage. :(
