Room Correction... "So that's where the problem was!"

Post by cassmcentee » Mon Sep 15, 2014 9:39 pm

Just ran the IKmedia ARC2 Room correction program and wah-lah found the gaps within the studio that my ears couldn't catch.
Just did my first mix with it on, then disabled it for the bounce down.
Will share the tune at the Road Rally... (with a bunch of others)
but in the meantime...
here is a screenshot of the correction... (Crazy!)
I can now hear the bass that was hiding from my ears

cool...
um... so does it just do EQing? Cause you really can't EQ certain problems caused by nulls and peaks in reflected waves.

well.. i suppose you could EQ some frequency build-up, but NOT the nulls... if you try to make a frequency louder that is missing because of reflections, all you get is more nothing... right? :?

Reminds me of one time my guitar player was trying to tune his guitar while playing through an EXTREMELY short delay. Every time he would get to the proper tuning... the note would disappear because of phase cancellation

Russell,
I hear ya!
For how well the mix sounds on cross platforms now, I have to believe that they accounted for such possibilities as reflection cancelling...???
My room is Super Dead, you walk in and everything goes silent (double walls airgapped and with 3 1/2" denim insulation, fabric covered).
So I didn't worry about reflection, didn't even think of it actually...
But the insulation sure eats up some tones.
I ran the test with my KRK5's...
When I get the chance I want to try my KRK8's and see how differently it'll read the bigger monitors...

p.s. The test was run with 14 differing microphone placements using my head position as the starting point

Low frequencies are usually the big bad culprit with "nulls" so if you aren't pushing a lot of air with low frequency drivers....
Sounds like you've really sucked the highs out of the room, so I can see how this ARC2 would work very well.

Room correction or room tuning is imperative. We re-tune our studio 2-3 times a year at least. You want to make sure you're actually hearing what's there. We use SMART , it's designed for tuning concert halls and stadiums but it works great. We eq the speaker output with a Symetrix Solus 16. The difference in our mixes before and after using these tools are night and day.
