Building a Hackintosh

Post by orest » Wed Sep 17, 2014 11:14 am

Did not have the money to buy a Mac Pro.

So, I am building my own custom PC that will be able to run Mac OS X.

When the build is complete it will be a Core i7 4790k quad core with 16 gig of ram (to start with). It will also have 5 SSD drives and an nVidia graphic card.

If someone is interested I will post the complete setup and post a step by step guide.

I know several people who use them in their studios and they work great.

I will do so!

And the thing is, I need a dedicated hard drive for Windows 7 as well.

I will not run a DAW system on this computer. The Mac partition will only be used for Vienna Ensemble Pro and link that to my Macbook pro machine (running Logic)

For those interested in something like this and not feeling up to the task of DYI, I just found this guy building custom hacintoshes with some good reviews. I'm planning to get one within a month or so.

He also has a website, something to do with "Iconic Workstations" if you want to google it.

He has good prices for sure!

My build will be somewhat less powerful (no Xeon, mine is Devil's Canyon. Strange name..)

But, I think mine will handle all the tasks needed.

He's adding Thunderbolt ports this month as well. I plan to order one with USB, FW and Thunderbolt for convenience.

Success!

I did it! I actually built my own working Hackintosh computer!

Specs:
Gigabyte gaming 3 killer ethernet motherboard
Core i7 4790k CPU
GT 740 nVidia GPU
16 gig Ballistix sports crucial memory
3 SSD drives (1 SSD drive running Windows 7)
Noctua fans (for the case and CPU)
Fractal design r4

I had some problems getting the killer ethernet to work, but after using the Atheros Multibeast it did work. The audio is not working, but I will run the iRig pro on this computer. I also had some problems with login on to my apple ID, but after some configurations and throwing out some ethernet preferences plists it did work.

Benchmark is 4 000 single core and 15 000 multi core. So I am pretty satisfied!

I have installed Logic, Vienna ensemble pro and Kontakt 5 so far. No problems!
