Searching for a Love Like Yours

Searching For a Love Like Yours ©2014 Robert George BMI

After school we’d sit beneath the oak outside the gym
Talk and read Eudora Welty until night rolled in
Hoping that our senior year would never end
Didn’t change how fast it went
Then I left your light and beauty
When the silent call of duty
Led me off to foreign shores

Then my sister wrote me when she heard it from your mom
You’d been through a hometown boy or two and you’d moved on
I survived a secret op near Tripoli
Just to let a sad heart almost cripple me
There was rotgut bourbon and a bar fight
Nights I’d lie awake and watch the starlight
Searching for a love like yours

On that final op I was the only mean Marine
With a picture of his lost love taped to his canteen
Then I backpacked Europe for a wasted year
Saw the sights and drank some German beer
There were Berlin hostels…Bangor benches
Cots as cold and hard as combat trenches
Nights out on the Scottish moors

I was tempted by a model in a Paris club
Serenaded by a gypsy in a Belfast pub
Slept up in the hayloft of an old Dutch barn
Where a farm girl tried to wrap me in her arms
They were young and sweet and lonely
But I told them I was only
Searching for a love like yours

After all that time I couldn’t see
Love was waiting where I thought it wouldn’t be

Then one misty afternoon my fate revealed itself
In a dusty volume on a London bookstore shelf
So I conned a passage on a cargo ship
Hid below deck the entire trip
Was I crazy, foolish or courageous
Each night as I read familiar pages
Lyin’ on those iron floors

It was summer when I found myself beneath that oak
Prayin’ that my dreams and hopes were more than drifting smoke
I returned each morning for a week or so
Then I heard a voice from long ago
I could feel the hand of fate pass through me
As she kissed my cheek and whispered to me
“I’ve been searching for a love like yours

O but after all this time I couldn’t see
Love was waiting where I thought it wouldn’t be”

Once again we sat beneath the tree outside the gym
Talked and read Eudora Welty until night rolled in
We both have regrets for choices that we made
But the road to love is rarely straight
Loneliness has many hidden faces
And I met a few in midnight places
Searching for a love like yours

Searching for a love like yours
Searching for a love like yours…
