ok, I ranted and posted too quickly

Post by feaker66 » Mon Sep 29, 2014 4:00 pm

I got one track to stick, so don't bother reading the rest. I now have to figure out how I did it.

I need to find a place when I can pay money to get answers. If you are old and still can make songs and you have a glitch, you are screwed.

I recorded a song yesterday that my 9 year old granddaughter wrote called "would you be my friend" It is about a friendship that develops between a daisy and a butterfly.

I told her that I should have a rough draft today that I could send her.

I forgot my 1/4 inch adapter for the headphones, so we just laid the (cheap sm58a) mic on the bed. I strummed and she sang. The vocal turned out awesome with only a little guitar in the background. Her voice is precious.

I recorded it with my lap top using the same studio one software as I presently have in my studio.

I import the tracks (4) and everything looked great. It played back perfectly with the lowest noise I have ever gotten.

I saved the four tracks and just for the heck of it, closed out the program and then came back in. Great:) all working.

Here is the problem, if I pull the jump drive and try to start the program again, the four tracks come up, but they are all blank. It says :

locate missing files Found in C\users\owners\documents\studio one\would you be my friend (are you freakin kiddin me?)

This should be so simple. I am soo upset. Why, because I don't have a clue what to do now and nobody to call.

Here is my statement regarding this issue. I will send $50 cash, per session, to anyone who can help me through this and any other messes I encounter.

I just want to record and enjoy it. Really takes the fun out of it. My wife says I am in a super rant and it isn't good for my damaged heart. I agree.

Paul,

If you haven't already, I'd recommend registering on the Presonus forum to ask for Studio One focused assistance.

Good luck.

my guess is that the session is saved on the hard drive in the machine, and the audio is still on the jump drive.

Unfortunately this happens from time to time with almost every DAW that I have used. Pro Tools actually being one of the worst culprits.

What seems to happen is that you make / save the project in a certain location, and the audio is referenced from wherever it was originally saved, but is not COPIED into the audio files portion of the new project in the new location.

the solution is usually to (in your case) insert the jump drive and open the session. Hopefully all the audio is there.

then "save as" or "save as copy" or "consolidate session" (different DAWs may have different similar commands) which will make a new copy of the session and copy all the audio files into the new session location from where they previously resided all over the place.

That's where I would look and what I would try to do.

good luck Paul.

Checked it out and registered Rob. Wasn't able to find the exact cure. Hardest part is to have the right catch words in the search

I'm not sure how Studio One works, but it definitely sounds like your audio files are on your jump drive. The easy fix would be to start a blank session, then import the audio from the jump drive to new tracks. Id be shocked if Studio One didn't have that feature. I've had to do that more than once in PT. Be sure to "save as" as mentioned above, or the files will remain on the jump drive.

Hi Jam

I got on the forum, posted my problem and some dude wrote this. It worked, I am soooo pumped

When you drag files into S1, it will reference that in place, so thats why they disappear when you pull the drive.

Go back into that song (make sure the drive is plugged in), and open the browser on the left (make sure at this point the files are there and not missing in the song). Now at the bottom of the browser, look for the "pool" tab and select. Now right click in the pool (anywhere), and select "Copy External Files". That will put all audio and midi files used in the song into the media folder created when you created the song. Now take the usb file out and you wont have to worry.

There is also a setting in the global options screen (Top Menu Studioone/Options) that will have S1 ask on exit if you want to copy external files. May be a good idea to turn that on. This is only a circumstance that you will see when you drag files into a song. You don't need to worry about anything if the files are recorded in S1.

Thanks sooo much

sincerely

Paul

This happens in Ableton Live as well... I have to remember to "collect all and save" when using colab files from a usb thumb drive.

Sounds like you got it figured out!

Maybe next time, copy the files from the jump drive to one of your computer's audio drives first -- and disconnect your jump drive before you even open your DAW.
