I don't play bass live anymore so I'd like to get high quality home studio tracks but invest as little into my bass guitar as possible. The most common bass tone in modern music is the Fender bass, Jazz or Precision though I'd agree the Jazz model being most popular of all. Buying a second hand Fender Jazz 4 string (MIM or Made In Mexico) I feel is the best way to go off ebay or craigslist which should average about $300 USD, don't need a case if you are not gigging though if its included its the best way to ship the guitar and then sell it for $50 and up. The electronics are a major issue as the stock pickups sound dull and lifeless so a great solution is getting used Fender Jazz Noiseless Bass pickups off of ebay is very inexpensive option and have your local music shop guitar tech swap out the stock pickups for the noiseless upgraded will in totla cost about $100 USD. Once you're done you'll have a pro sounding bass without breaking the bank that will hold its value if you ever decided to sell it.
This is exactly what I've done and I'm loving the bass tracks that I'm producing, if bass isn't your primary instrument there is no reason to have a high priced instrument when in the end all that matters is the quality of the sound it makes and cheap basses can not make pro quality tracks without pickup upgrades.
