Counting the Daisies - new mix
In the last installment, I was looking for a good uke player for this song, and Michelle Lockey stepped forward (thanks Shell!), and I added a bit of my own as well.
So here's the new mix of "Counting the Daisies" - co-written with Jen Armstrong, who also sang. [10.19.14 - Mix updated with more drums.]
Thanks for listening!

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Richard,
Everything sounds good.
To make it even better, I'd be inclined to build the drums a little more, and sooner than you do, as the song starts to grow. The hi hat pattern and sound that you start with, sounds kind of tacky, BUT, it works really well with the mood of the song. However, I think it goes on too long without a change. I'd really like to hear the snare come in sooner, and grow in stature as the song progress. It's a great vocal, so why not make the drums great too?
Good luck with it.
John

John, excellent suggestion. I have now updated the arrangement and re-posted (same link). Thanks!.

Your singer is awesome and well, your production, we kinda expect to really good:)
I was wondering about the bass. I love the runs, but I was wondering at like around 1:33 if there could be just some single notes in there to break it up a little and have your cute voiced singer shine thru a bit more??
I am the worst mixoligist on the planet, but once in awhile I have to chirp??
Sincerely
Paul

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Hey Richard, cool song! Very quirky and cute and sweet. I'm not totally sold on the drum sounds though, as they're a bit thin and un-lifelike to my ears. However, I think in the context of this song they work, but I'm wondering if the tune would have more life with different drums? Maybe brushes and a jazzy ride pattern? There's just so much character to this song and I'm worried that the drums detract from the full potential.
You got any other drum sounds or loops you could toss in there just to see what happens?

Yeah I've got agree with Matt. As I said the sound works originally, but you've got progress it along, quicker to really sell it!
I'd bring in the snare at 0:30 or no later than 0:57. So by the time you get to 1:51 you're swinging it more that what you've currently got.
Or, have the song start with just the voice and piano and then bring everything up at 0:30.
It's still cool as is.

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Thanks guys. I've been struggling with the drum parts, but I'll take another stab. I didn't want the drums to get so big that they would mask Jen's voice, but I'll try to find the right balance.
Thanks again for these suggestions, which are very helpful.

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Okay, I worked on the drums, added brushes and fills, etc. Hopefully it's an improvement.
Now I need to make CDs for the Rally.

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Richard,
I think it's a big improvement. It builds really well to a perfect ending (it's swinging like it should!). And I really liked the stripped down intro.
I'm not sure if you're done with it or not, but if you want to make one last final tweak, I'd make the snare rhythms in the 2nd verse a little more simple.
Nice job.

Re: Counting the Daisies - new mix
Very nice and cute.
I am missing some statement in the steel drums bass thing. At least in the intro it could loose some of the boxiness in my opinion. It seems to me it carries the same EQ throughout the song.
More "bing" and less "buoing" (hopeless description, i know )
