combine my TV placements website with performer/sales site?

Post by pepeluis » Thu Nov 06, 2014 3:19 pm

Hi Folks, I would find it valuable to get opinions from you all on the following issue as I have been pondering over it for some time!
I have recently had put together my website (www.joseleonmusic.com) focusing on my writing and highlighting TV placements etc. On the MUSIC tab can be heard some of my material.
As yet I don’t have a platform to sell my music either as physical CDs or downloads.
I have been debating whether to have a separate website as my main artist info/selling platform or combine this feature with the website I already have.
The photos on the existing site I think portray me as primarily a studio based songwriter/composer but I have just had some pics done of me much more as a performing and recording artist which I plan to have on my album artwork. I would not want to use the ones on my existing site to represent myself as a performing artist.

I do see quite a few Film/TV writer/composer sites that seem to to put everything on there, gigs, album sales, teaching (which I also do).
By combining sites I am wary of coming across as a `jack of all trades` and not clearly defining my specialties and focus although I like my existing webname I could alternatively have a new website for selling etc and just link from one to the other.
I hope I have made my query clear! Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks !

Hmmm. I could understand if you were a porn star or a plumber and wanted to keep the websites separate, otherwise I don't understand why they would be separate, unless you had a band which you might want to keep separate. It's not that you would look any less of a "jack of all trades", but rather multiple personality if you have links to your other "personas",lol! It doesn't make any sense, just confusing. I don't think people have a problem with performer, film/tv composer, author, actor and producer... Actually the performer part might make you more attractive to film/tv customers. It all seems relevant to me.

Hi Len911, many thanks for your thoughts. It is very helpful to get your input. The more I think about it the more sense your point makes, I think my question was because when I see sites of some really successful film/tv writers/composers I don't think they present themselves as gigging artists who also write (or vica versa) but more clearly as dedicated composers who focus primarily on what is required for the brief and this presentation in some way communicates that they are not distracted by other things such as getting and doing gigs etc.
I do take your point that including all this may make it more interesting to a supervisor rather than less.
Deep down I think I do want to put it all on one site as ultimately this is me and what I do so why not?
I think your comments do highlight the risk of appearing to have multiple personalities! probably not the best impression to give!
many thanks for your comments.

I wanted to have a site for film/tv that was separate from my artist/gigging/performing songwriter site and for me the separation was about providing an easy way for film/tv reps to find and listen to music specifically written for them. My 'personal' site was for uploading works in progress, worktapes of songs written for FAWM and 50-90, more a 'creative' site to illustrate my explorations and journey; my 'business' site has only music that I feel is 'over the bar', is organized into genres, and includes excerpts of tracks signed as well as a business oriented bio.

In your case though it sounds like one-stop shopping might work!

Hi Hummingbird and Len911.
thanks for your thoughts.I get your approach Hummingbird as that was the line of thought I was following but having discussed it with my web designer I am leaning towards the idea of keeping the same webname but on the very front page have separate buttons leading to the different aspects of what I do, for example MUSIC FOR MEDIA. BUY MUSIC. TEACHING (I teach Flamenco Guitar as well). That way the website becomes a hub for everything I do but does not throw it all at the viewer so they have to sift through to find what they might be looking for, they can go directly to what they seek then if they are interested can check out other aspects if they wish. regarding gigging at the moment I am not really performing my own material but doing mostly Flamenco and Latin gigs, where needed most of this can be addressed via facebook etc. That can be linked to on my site .
I find all of your ideas very helpful so thanks again. any further ideas are always great to hear
