Well, I warmed my plate and found the salt and peppershakers
Numbers watchin’ from the microwave and coffeemaker
And although it seems like clocks’ve been around forever
Soulless digits say that they’re more meaningless than ever
So I finished supper and I poured myself a Scotch
Then unlocked my desk and grabbed my Granpa’s pocket watch
And my life is just a ripple in the stream of time
Yet somehow this old time piece gives me peace of mind
I can hear the moments march between my thumb and fingers
Not a one permitted by my mortal fate to linger
And I feel him with me when I hold it and I wind it
It reflects my Granpa’s ghost like that’s how heaven timed it
And though time has built our brief lives with its own two hands
Without fam’ly mem’ries they’re just castles made of sand
And my life is just a ripple in the stream of time
Yet somehow this old time piece gives me peace of mind
Granpa said it was a present from a Paris barmaid back in ‘45
She inscribed her kisses in his spirit and his name in gold
Now it’s just a quaint antique and only stories have survived
And yet can a thing that captures minutes be considered old
And my life is just a ripple in the stream of time
Yet somehow this old time piece gives me peace of mind
O I often ponder when I use the microwave
How much time is gained and yet no memories are saved…
