Since we are talking about headphones... I was thinking of getting something more comfortable than earbuds for use with my mobile phone when I'm out and about (that's what I wood-shed a'las on... mobilephoneSpotify and earbuds) so I looked at the Dr. Dre Beats... REALLY??? more expensive than my fav Sony's REALLY??? nope.. I'll just buy an extra pair of my fav cans.

Russell, I don't get the expense of the Beats headphones either. Cans like the MR7506, HD280, and ATH-M50 "beats" the pants  off of the newly Apple acquired personal listening devices.

as far as ear bud style headphones, the ones that come with the newer iphone/ipods sound amazing ..

i cant say enoough.. they have an angle to the newer style ones that fit in your ear like they were formed to my ear... and they dont fall out easy.

the freq response is crisp with surprisingly excellent bass... you really must try them for your self..

i find i can wear them for hours .. unlike anything else i've used..

beats by dre i have not tried ..but the wireless feature looks nice

Peter,

I'm similar to Ethan. I have open head phones (AKG K612 Pro) and closed (audio technica, ATH-M50x) and use them for various reasons. The Audio Technica I bought at the Rally - Westlake gave me $50 and even though they didn't have them at the Rally they had one of the salesman bring them the next day. He told me they were the most popular and I've got to say they are really good (they replaced my 20 year Fostex headphones).

Just read a blog about how closed backed cans can really screw with a singer when tracking... and how the phones bleed in the mic is better than trying to Melodyne their out-of-tune vox.

The bloggist's suggestion is that open backed cans, one-ear-out, or... 1 1/2 ears out... helps the vocalist hear their natural voice they way they are use to hearing it and helps them give a better performance.

But, I guess we are talking about mixing here.... ??

My favorite open cans are the Sennheiser HD 414.. I fell in love with them when I was a morning-show DJ for a couple of years.

EDIT: i replaced the yellow pads on mine due to the age... (they started deteriorating into my ear canal)
