New Forum Member, Checking In
Hey guys and gals, I'm Jason!
The quick stuff - 29, Des Moines Iowa, Americana and Country are my main genres.
I've been writing since about the age of 8 and have become more serious about my writing in the last 2 or 3 years. I picked up guitar when I was 15 and wrote and played punk rock songs. After high school it was time to get that "real job" my father was always harping about so I joined the Navy and rode submarines for 5 years. After getting out, I did the other sensible thing and got a safe Bachelor degree at a local business college. Right now, I'm working a cubicle day job that drives me nuts. With all that non-related experience, there's still a voice in my head that tells me to follow music. Not very sensible.
I found out about Taxi from a producer I worked with that was at the rally a few years back, Tommy Gilliland. I'm not sure enough in my ability yet to drop the dough for a full membership but until then I want to spend some time in the forum figuring this stuff out. I'm reading "Writing Better Lyrics" and Berklee's "Melody In Songwriting." I try to get at least some object writing in every day. And since I've started my lyrics have definitely improved but my melodies still need help. When I get something done I'm comfortable sharing I'll definitely post it up here.
I look forward to interacting with everyone!

I was in the same boat 5 years ago before joining Taxi. In My experience, you never think you're ready. But once you make that commitment, it gives you the motivation to amp up your game and go for it. And writing for the listings, getting the feedback is a huge educational tool.jasonrumley wrote:Hey guys and gals, I'm Jason!

welcome to the forum!
sure spend some time figuring stuff out - but like Kayle says - committing makes you approach things differently.
I view it in this way: its my business. I have to spend some money on marketing. TAXI membership and submission fees are that. If you run a Sole Proprietorship or better as your music business - you may find all that expense to be tax deductible (consult your tax professional to make sure).
good luck!

Welcome Jason! Being involved with the Forums is a great way to get a feel for things. There are many advantages to Taxi membership. The critiques are a great resource for improvement (and thickening one's skin). The opportunity to collaborate is also a great option though membership is not required. Much success with your music!
Onward and upward!
