You're doing something right. I believe you got a nice license recently, elsewhere? ;)
Yep. First one outside the Taxi Rally. Just having fun and trying to produce songs that sell.

well..well...well..........

looks like I was right early on. Youtube is actually normalizing their volume levels.

see this post by respected mastering engineer and champion of dynamic range - Ian Shepherd

so now the question is:

do you still need to choose an iTunes file or a CD WAV as a master ref if you do your own mastering?

interesting developments for sure.

Good post Andy. I like to use youtube reference tracks to mix. but I dont master. Mixing is so important as it really does affect final master. I still use LANDR to polish tracks off..an unbiased ear although its a robots ear. :D

I use WAV files for reference because WAV is the format I'm working in. if I had the option, I'd use 24-bit WAVs, because 24-bit is the resolution I'm working at. I don't think using lossy file formats for a reference is ever a good idea.

In my quest to learn more about mastering techniques I stumbled upon Ian Shepherds Production Advice Site.
As some of you know, he is a huge supporter of retaining dynamics in music. He even went as far to start Dynamic Range Day.
I think I watched every video and became truly interested.

His videos displayed some of the meters he used on a regular basis.

The first one was the TT meter or brainwork bx meter
The second was the inexpensive VU meter from Klanghelm VUMT duo about $10bucks. He swears by it
The Third meter used was Meter Plugs Lcast. Fantastic revealing meter

I purchased all 3 (on sale of course) and I love them. I think they keep you in line. If you set them right they will give you quite a read and keep you in the new standard ball park.
I find myself not only being guided by my ears but the meters as well.
They let you know where you are.

As I understand the current developments, I think it depends on what target you are producing for.

For tv/film productions, (probably) no (they will (probably) match levels to specs in post)
If you produce directly (DiY) to release on iTunes ect., yes (still)
If you are responsible for music in an Indie tv/film production, no (but you might want to match levels to EBU/IBU specs)

Izotope comes with a new Loudness Meter soon https://www.izotope.com/en/products/pos ... s-control/
I think their release indicate that loudness compliance is something more and more will be aware of now.
