Mystery Hollow Cemetery ©2015 Robert George BMI

I spent last night at an empty bar
On stage with a coupla bumbling guys
We had lotsa beer and old guitars
And we slurred our way through “Tumbling Dice”
Then I staggered to my old Chevelle
And I pulled out on the street alone
Then I woke up and I felt like hell
When my uncle called me on the phone

Yeah, I hadda come in on my day off and even worse
With my DUIs it’s my last morning driving the hearse

And maybe that old graveyard’s made me superstitious
Cos they say it safeguards lonely people’s wishes
They say some are swallowed…some are only buried
In the Mystery Hollow Cemetery

Hell, I’d have my DUIs all fixed
If my fav’rite lawyer hadn’t died
That old sheister sure knew all the tricks
I could run a hundred more red lights
It’s me who drove him down that final road
Then I watched him lowered in the dirt
Laying on that lawyer’s funeral coat
Was a copy of “To Kill a Mockingbird”

Though that shady lawyer was a guy you’d call in a pinch
No one ever would mistake him for an Atticus Finch

But maybe that old graveyard’s made me superstitious
Cos they say it safeguards lonely people’s wishes
They say some are swallowed…some are only buried
In the Mystery Hollow Cemetery

Maybe in the end
After all we dream and sweat and gain
Llife is only wind
And loss of time is all that we retain

I could hear the crack of stormy skies
High above that long black Cadillac
Clouds were clapping as I realized
This time I’m the one who’s in the back
Then it came back to me in a flash
I’d just pulled out from that all night bar
My Chevelle was t-boned in a crash
And that eighteen wheeler crushed the car

Although I think unfulfilled hearts are already entombed
And that no amount of grief or regret gets them exhumed

But maybe this old graveyard’s made me superstitious
Cos they say it safeguards lonely people’s wishes
They say some are swallowed…some are only buried
In the Mystery Hollow Cemetery

Now I lay and think about my days
While misty fingers grip the stones
Rows of wilted old bouquets
Are the midway in a carnival of bones
Ghosts are all I feel and all I see
So I think of songs I should’ve wrote
Was it who I could’ve been that buried me
With “Exile on Main Street” on my coat

And will death unlock my skull now with a skeleton key
Letting all my sadness scatter and my daydreams go free

O maybe this old graveyard’s made me superstitious
Cos they say it safeguards lonely people’s wishes
They say some are swallowed…some are only buried
In the Mystery Hollow Cemetery
