Starting A Band - The Legal Way

Post by MajestycSymphony » Tue Feb 24, 2015 6:52 am

I'm needing help with starting a band. I'm trying to do this as a sole-proprietorship where everyone else involved is considered to be an independent contractor. Over many years I now understand the importance of trying to run a band as a business though I am not quite sure on how I should go about it.

Here are some things that I do know I will need to start off with:

Bringing in band members: Independent Contractor Agreement (When they will be paid, equipment ownership, duties to be performed, etc.)

Artists for CD's, T-Shirts etc.: Art Agreement (Duties to be performed, Royalties to be paid with the sale of each item and or a lump sum for the rights of the item, for instances such as a website background/layout.)

For use of other peoples songs/poetry: Mechanical License (This will be used for collaboration efforts)

So far this is all that I can think of in order to get my band up and running so that I can start practice sessions, get artwork created, and create merchandise for later performances.

Is there anything that I am missing or should think about when creating these?

Thanks for your time on these...Robert.
