back to the gulf coast

Post by rdance » Thu Feb 26, 2015 10:12 am

have been working on so many other projects lately that there's been no time to just write some fresh stuff on my own. 143 hooks on the phone...one down, 142 to go.

did this on the old beat up tascam yesterday. it came out southern rock, didn't plan it, but that's what happened.

putting it up here to see if you think it's worth going into the studio, adding a real drummer and re-mix.

all comments welcome, arrangement, instrumentation, etc.

gracias!

Cool and inspiring track.
FWIW: sent you PM of some serious lyrics to go along your melody & guitar riff.

Richard,

Great interplay between the lead guitar and the organ (and great lead playing). Nice melodic movement.

If this was the 70s or 80s I would say you've just written yourself a perfect TV theme.

Great Tune Rich. I vote for adding the real drummer. Always well played.

Richard, I'm no expert, but I would say that this has to be perfect for a film or TV-series - and then without real drums, because it's fine as it is by my ears.

Heya Crawdaddy.

It's a smooth and kinda laid back piece. Cool. 8-)

What's your target? Instrumental or Song? It's got Song structure. As far as TV music, the melodies seem on target to stay out of the way of the scene. But I'm having trouble picturing a scene where it could be used... maybe I don't watch the correct shows

Great hooks in this. It's a keeper as far as I can hear.

Hi crawdandy

Lots of directions on this one for me.

0 to 27 ish sounds early sixties

27 to 33 is and again at 52 ish soumds pure Beatles

liked the guitar work starting at one minute, especially the harmony guitars

has to be an instrumental

good stuff bud

Sincerely

Paul

Richard,

Great playing and writing. I hear that TV theme too  . The only thing I came up with to add is that about a minute and a half goes by before the main theme comes back at the end. Perhaps it could happen one more time before the section that comes in at 1:23. (I hope you are on a DAW now.) That way, if this idea happens to work for you, you nail the main theme once more and then go off for 60 seconds and then return to it. I'm nit-picking and this is a great track.

thanks for the feedback fellas!

bob, yeah, i think the sections could be re-ordered in different ways. still noodling with that.

russ, unless a client needs something specific, i usually do my instrumentals in song structure format, in case i decide to add lyrics later. the song format also creates nice sections editors can grab.

this track was more an exercise in getting back into writing shape since i've been busy with other stuff. i know it's limited placement use being 70's southern rock, but if they ever come up i've got a few.

since i can't seem to avoid writing in the earlier eras i grew up in, i tend to think my stuff will be used more in indie films than stock music for reality tv, etc.

but i'm having fun!

cheers

Awesome guitar as always. I totally get the era and TV theme vibe and comments. Really cool. I totally get the ideas on the phone thing too! I'll never get round to half of them! I keep saying I have to stop doing it.

Just curious - do you always get real players for rhythm?

I know you have a successful formula at this stage, but do you ever use MIDI drums etc? I suppose I'm thinking if it was a piece that you thought was 'borderline' or whatever, then you could put it in your B category so to speak and put MIDI drums on, rather than shelling out and all the inconvenience involved in real players etc. (not that I'm saying this would be in your B Category obviously)

When I say "inconvenience involved in real players", its clearly one of the finest inconveniences a man can have :)
