Just want to know why.

Post by bigshot » Fri Mar 13, 2015 5:56 pm

Hi folks !

Hope everyone is well and keeping at it on a daily basis!

So I submitted to this hip hop listing and wanted to know what should I have done to make this instrumental NOT sound MIDI as it was mentioned on my returned review.

(go to taxi.com/bigshot and listen to the "back to old ways" track)

Let me know and pointers will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Hey Bigshot - for some reason I can't access your taxi page?

Maybe double check the link, there's lots of people who can help much better than I for this genre :) -diane in Wasaga Beach

Hello Bigshot! To me there seemed to be rigid quantization and no change in velocity. Moving the notes a few ticks before or after the beat should help with the rigidity, and if using a sampled instrument with many different velocity layers
changing the velocity values will change the dynamics of the sound of the notes. If there is only one velocity layer, as in a sampled loop, the only thing you'd be doing is changing the gain of the same sampled note. Hth

Heya Big Shot

To help with the MIDIness I would fix the timing in the snare, it is way off in places... and when it is exactly off by the same every go-around, that makes it sound MIDI. Also, like Len says, some changeup in the velocities would help is sound less rigid, specially if the new velocities trigger a new sample of the same snare. The High-Hat sound you have would be a good supporting sound back in the mix and with the very top highs rolled off a bit, then put an additional High-hat part in there with some tasty playing in it.
You could also give everything more depth (front to back) it seems pretty dry and in-your-face.
