Re: Learn to Play the Guitar or Buy Guitar Simulation Softwa
Hi Andy,
The one that gets close has just been released by Native Instruments and is called "Strummed Acoustic". I don't think is can do nylon strings but it does have a lot of variation. However, I am with you - nothing can. I've got a "Reissue 57 Stratt" that sits under the bed and I wish I had an acoustic instead.
Hope your doing well.
Alan

Ahem, the easiest thing is to hire a guitarist; they're thick on the ground in any season.

I was in the same situation, except I was also without piano chops.
A lot of great points already, so I'll add that it was totally worth picking up guitar. Of course, being a hip hop guy, its not something I get to use often. But it wasnt very difficult to get strumming and sounding decent enough to be in my toolbox of textures.

Learn to play the guitar, but make sure it's in tune and change your strings before they get tired... it never hurts to learn and it's easier to carry than a piano.
Hire a guitar player - but make sure you get a 'work for hire' signed.

This video shows Ample guitar's tab player used with Guitar Pro 6 tab software. I shouldn't say "with", it basically plays a guitar tab, though you can edit the tab in GP6, save it, refresh in Ample guitar and it will play the revision.
The combination is most certainly a game changer, and worth taking a look at.
Having a notation program that is fairly complete chock full of articulations you can just click on and apply to the score and have a vsti play, without a lot of minute fussing, is really great imo.
The alternative is buying a guitar, learning to play, buying a good microphone and preamp to record with, a good space to record, if you don't already have that. If you are only recording and not performing live, and aren't looking for a signature sound... Just sayin'...

Ouch. That's not gonna fool many, especially not guitar players, sorry. Even if the narrator knew how to pronounce rasgueado, it wouldn't help, though that's actually an articulation that kinda seems to work, in isolation. (just not when it's used a couple times in succession) The whole thing taken together is bollocks, IMO, even if it's the best I've heard, so far.
You'd have to use it sparingly, and never in isolation. The note releases, in particular sound unnatural. The only use I'd ever have for it is maybe learning new parts from TAB or sketching out a part that I maybe couldn't execute in realtime. Some of the strumming sounds okay, though, and some of the slides, but the hammer-ons are not working for me.
Definitely learn or hire, is my advice. It's almost always helpful to have at least one real instrument in the mix, and both guitars and guitarists come pretty cheap, these days.

Russ takes a look at the Ample Guitar T Acoustic Guitar virtual instrument in this extended video review. Check out what he thinks playing a guitar VI when he owns the real guitar!
I'm not a guitar player. Could I tell the difference? Probably, mostly by the use of crappy mics, terrible acoustics and off axis mic response or comb filtering by real guitarists rather than the sound purity. Maybe Russ at Pro Tools Expert is bollocks?? I assumed since he said he owned the Taylor guitar that he was a guitarist?
The first video was demonstrating the tab player with Guitar Pro. I'm sure there are other tutorials to adjust note releases, strumming, slides, hammer-ons, etc., if not, the manual probably does.
At any rate it's probably not a good use of time to wait on any double-blind studies whether they sound convincing or not. If a duck call sounds like a duck, it's fulfilled it's mission. Only the fate of a called duck cares whether it's a real duck or not, lol!

Both is a great Suggestion. But definitely learn the guitar! There are great online coureses for 17 bucks on Udemy.com and you can start with a Yamaha F series if youre looking for an affordable starter that still stays in tune and doesn't Sound awful. Added bonus? Playing the guitar is undeniably cool

I'm in the "Too old to rock and roll, but too young to die" phase of my life. Too late for cool, closer to, "get off my lawn!", however I must say, I live on the tall grass prairie, and if up to me, I would let the grass grow tall, and anyone daring enough to get in the lawn and get lost, would gladly do a prairie burn to find you, lol! Well, probably not really!
