Virtual Drum Loop

Post by DWMusic » Wed Mar 25, 2015 5:38 am

I would like to start to writing/recording hip-hop and EDM tracks.
What virtual drum loops work well in these genres?

I have PT 11, so I use Boom a lot and some EZdrummer samples.

It sounds like musicians can get a lot of tracks placed with these genres and I am very motivated to learn a new style.
Any info you can offer, would be great great!

I would recon hip hop beats usually are built from the ground up as they are just one element of a beat and are simple (yet require some finesse), but Venegance loops are heavily used for EDM http://www.vengeance-sound.com/

But also check out The Loop Loft http://www.thelooploft.com/

For EDM Sample Magic is a great place to check. Some of the drum loops are good to go. If you just like a kick you can cut it out and add in a cymbal top loop. The possibilities are endless.

I prefer virtual instruments to loops, because there's more flexibility and there's less risk of using what's identifiably a loop; that can be less important in some genres-I think all House music uses the same kick drum sample, for example.

A few loops on a CD or DVD can run $40-$100, and many single-genre producers collect them, but if you'd rather cover lots of genres and have the loops organized for you, along with tools for beat-slicing and transforming them, you might want to look into this industry standard: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/StylusRMXxp Bonus, it makes creating loop variations child's play.

I prefer working with midi but sometimes an audio loop works. at least they are good to sketch with. then sometimes the loop fits well with the track so best to leave it. you know if it aint broke don't fix it. But definately best to chop up the loop and seperate the instruments for more control over each one. guess whatever works in the end.

Oh and us edm guys have 1,000's of different sounding kicks..we can hear the difference. but yeah 4 on the floor mainly :D

Ableton Live is great for working with loops; it has a built-in beat-slicer. Fruity Loops is also popular, but I haven't tried it.
