Comedy / Spaghetti Irish instrumental :) - mix comments?

Post by denalihighway » Sat Mar 28, 2015 11:27 am

Hey dudes / dudettes,

So as part of a brief to write some comedy style music   , I reworked this tune. Dried it up, added bass, more percussion, synths and the breakdown with banjo. I like where its it and I'm not gonna do much more with it I don't think, apart from doubling the 2nd part of the banjo section and letting it kick with some percussion, before it goes back into the final section.

Feel free to make any comments, always appreciated, but mainly I'd love some fresh ears on the mix. My headphones are screwed right now too, which sucks. I rely on them reasonably heavily to monitor bass stuff.

Okay, now that I've listened... time to be seriously judgmental
(emphasis on the 'mental' part  )
Guitar work definitely working & pegging this in the Spaghetti Western/movie style, imho.
Personally, would like if the horn parts had a bit more contrasting/staccato working in places.
For more of the Irish portion... maybe one or two more traditional instruments?
Uilleann pipes or tin whistle, or wood flute, perhaps?

If you were up to making yet another version: add in a big EDM thing and have at-the-ready
to submit to the next #Sod-Hop listing! :? 8-) (whenever that comes into vogue).

Seriously, though... cool: nice track, me thinks.

Gar - good job. I like the trumpets doing whole notes. I wouldn't change that. There's a high-pitched whistle-sounding sync that comes in at about 6 sec and also later. I'd delete from the first verse and save it for later in the song where I think it really works well.

LOL

How do I address all those one-liners?

Just to be clear - its not actually for a Spaghetti Irish thing or anything like that! That was just me being silly with the thread title... but since I'm Irish and its bordering on spaghetti style i thought i'd say that...its a broad brief. Just looking for upbeat stuff with some quirk.

My mother's spaghetti is nothing special - boiled into a paste, mixed with moonshine and fed through a bong, just like everyone else's I assume.

If I have time, and that's the big problem for this one, I'll look at the trumpet phrasings and see about something more exciting.

Sod-hop eh? I hope you've copyrighted that. Its only a matter o time...

Cheers due

Yeh... that'd be Uilleann pipes, fiddle, banjo, tin whistle with a half-time bodhran
to a funky Hip-Hop beat... and then Dublin it in the Chorus!! :?

Gar that was a whole lotta fun. Would like some kinda intro. I played it thru the first time and then for the second review, started at 41 seconds and like that way better. Picky picky, I know

Sincerely

Paul

Gar,

I agree with Larry. Delete that synth at 0:06. When it comes in a second time, I would also lower it by 1 dB. Then you're done in my opinion. BTW, I really like the break down.

I've got to say your banjo playing is exceptional. You should quit everything else and go on the road. That is you, right? I hope it's not a simulation! :D

Thanks Paul and John

John OF COURSE that's me playing - in fact I'm so good I did it all without a banjo

I went on tour playing solo banjo back in 2007 - but I got so into the genre that I fell in love with a sheep and everything went to sh*t...

On the upside...that 'synth' you are all referring to is actually me singing :D - so maybe that can be my next tour. Gareth Ebbs does synth impressions.

I took that advise with a slight variation , introducing it later, and dropping it in n out here n there. I like it.

many thanks for the comments gents, you guys rock :)
