Where's the Romance in That

Where’s the Romance in That ©2015 Robert George BMI

No one really knew my name yet
Though I’d had a hit or two
But a magazine, from the New York scene
Sent someone out for an interview
I picked her up at the airport
In my beat-up cruddy jeep
She thought were lost, as we bounced across
Rocks n craters in a muddy creek

She asked why I didn’t have a big home near the city
Instead of a cabin out here in the nitty gritty

I said, “Where’s the romance in that
Where’s the hist’ry, where’s the myst’ry
The magic and charm
The spirit and heart
Where’s the romance in that”

Then she asked about my fav’rite singers
As we sat down by the hearth
I said, “The Ramones, The Clash, George Jones, Johnny Cash
And I love U2 and Garth”
Then I switched on my old turntable
And I played “The Joshua Tree”
Then I sang along, and said heartfelt songs
Are the ones that mean the most to me”

She said, “I’da thought your stereo would be more high-tone
Like some space age speakers tethered to an iPhone”

I said, “Where’s the romance in that
Where’s the hist’ry, where’s the myst’ry
The magic and charm
The spirit and heart
Where’s the romance in that”

Then I poured her a cup of homebrew
And I sang a tune I recently wrote
It’s a cross between Waylon and the Black Keys
And her teardrops said she felt every note

I said, “For a song to reach the future”
It must respect the past
Songs are love and dreams, so before I sing
There is somethin’ I make sure I ask

“’Where’s the romance in that
Where’s the hist’ry, where’s the myst’ry
The magic and charm
The spirit and heart
Where’s the romance in that’”

O a singer can’t go wrong
With a sweet romantic song…
