Tree of Love ©2015 Robert George BMI
Jan and I went on a backroad drive one day
We stopped in a diner called the “Cherokee Café”
An old gal with long black hair soon brought us cake and tea
I asked if she knew of local landmarks we could see
Well, she smiled when she saw Jane’s engagement ring
And said just go south then turn at Ghost Dance Spring
We drove out there but all that we could see
Was a meadow with a giant tulip tree
So we laid a blanket in that quiet field of green
I kissed Jan and then we seemed to float off in a dream
And we saw a guy n girl there back in ‘44
They pledged their love before he left for war
Months went by and yet their love still burned
He proposed to her right there when he returned
Although many lovers carve their names in trees
Magic somehow carved their memories
In that tree of love
Time became a river and our dreams reversed its flow
We saw couple after couple courting years ago
Then the lovers who first kissed there centuries before
Seemed to cast a spell on that old tree forevermore
They both had long black hair and dressed in mule deer skins
And they’d run together through that meadow like the wind
When he took her in his arms beneath that tree one day
It became a place where love would never pass away
Although many lovers carve their names in trees
Magic somehow carved their memories
In that tree of love
Well, we drove back to that old café
And maybe we just missed it
We saw an empty, grassy field
Like it never existed
But we’d sensed the power of that tree
Whenever we were near it
So we wonder if somehow, a hundred years from now
Other lovers will feel our spirits
Under the tree of love
The tree of love…
