Gary grabbed his badge and gun and then resolved to face the day
Set a bowl of milk out for the kitten in the alleyway
And his first call was a doctor shot for his prescription pad
Gary seemed so cool and calm that witnesses all thought he had

A heart of stone and nerves of steel
As if he’s just way too numb to feel
He once had to tell a boy his mama died
In a senseless triple homicide
Some say he’s stoic but heroic
Others say this world we’re livin’ in
Has fin’lly given him a heart of stone

Then a fender bender turned into a stabbing at the mall
Followed by a shooting at a game of pick-up basketball
Talked a jumper on a rooftop who was egged on by the crowd
His lieutenant thinks you can’t do that for years on end without

A heart of stone and nerves of steel
Like he was just too numb to feel
He’s arrested kids with pressure cooker bombs
Stalkers and suburban hooker moms
Some say he’s stoic but heroic
Others say this world we’re livin’ in
Has fin’lly given him a heart of stone

Sirens echoed off the concrete canyons in the summer heat
He came home that night and saw that kitten lyin’ in the street
Gary took the empty bowl inside and never felt so sad
Sat there cryin’ although all his friends and colleagues thought he had
